WIndows 11 Driver Security Question

I’m usually a Mac user normally but have just bought a new Windows 11 Laptop for work and having a couple of teething issues.

I have an external CD drive that I’ve used with my Mac for ages, but it is compatible for both Windows and Mac. When I plug the drive into the Windows Laptop I get a pop up saying that the driver can’t be installed due to Microsoft Security, and on following the help it says that I need to turn off memory integrity in the core isolation section of security. If I do this the drive works.

The problem with this is that I don’t want the memory integrity off all the time and it’s a pain having to turn it off and on every time I use the CD drive, especially as it requires a restart. Is there a workaround anyone knows of? Can you set specific items to bypass the security settings?

The driver in question is GEARAspiWDM.sys, and a quick google tells me this is a driver that allows CD recording capabilities to iTunes.

I’ve looked at other CD drives and they’re all compatible with Mac and Windows so I’m guessing if I bought a new drive I’d run into the same issues?

Any help would be appreciated.

    Please do not change permissions on the C drive, that will cause huge problems with Windows and you would need to re-install Windows.

    With the number of problems you are experiencing the best option is to perform an in-place repair with the Windows 11 ISO.

    Please follow the steps, this is then just an update and your personal files, settings and installed software will not be affected.

    When the ISO file completes downloading

    Disconnect from the Internet

    Disconnect all external devices with the exception of a mouse or keyboard.

    Temporarily disable any 3rd party Anti-virus you may have installed

    Then, in Windows File Explorer, double click the ISO and then run Setup.exe and select the upgrade option.

    Thanks for this, so it's not a fresh install per se it's just a repair? I've thought about doing a fresh install tbh as that might get rid of the ASUS and McAfee Bloatware that's installed. Would you say the ISO is the better route for now? Can I remove the McAfee and ASUS software as well, or will this cause issues? In the past when I was a windows user I always found software like this slowed the system down after a while.

    I am not familiar with that software, but that error indicates a problem with the installer, try downloading a new copy of the installer for that software.

    Yeah I did that but it still doesn't work which I don't understand as it did yesterday. I've just googled one of the error codes and it's advised me to check drive permissions > security and check that the system has full control (which is does), however there is an unkown user, should this be there? Also, administrator have full control, but users don't, is this normal?

    That should not have caused Windows to revert to factory settings.

    In the search bar in Windows, type restore and from the resulting list, open the 'Create a restore point' utility

    Create a new system restore point, so you can use that in the future if you ever need to.

    Thanks, it's not that big of a drama really, I only got it yesterday so hadn't put loads of stuff on. I am starting to lose my patience with it though, as it's now not installing the iLok (PACE) Licence Manager giving the following error pop ups. It installed no issue yesterday

    I usually pretty au fait with computers and I'm often the one friends and family turn to to sort issues (admittedly I'm more au fait with Mac) but this is certainly causing the blood pressure to rise :(
