Defrag runs constantly

Win10 64. Defrag runs constantly, grinding away at my hard drives for no reason. The both drives are 0% fragmented, except for system reserved files which are 40% fragmented and defrag will not touch them. The Defrag is OFF, how do I stop the system running defrag every time the PC is idle for more than 60 seconds?? How do I defrage the system files which need defragging?

I'm referring to how your computer is crashing and has to be restarted, usually multiple times a day. It's either you or someone is force restarting by switching off the power or pressing the reset button, or the power supply is faulty.

    Right click the start button and select Windows Powershell.

    Copy and paste in the following code > press enter

    Get-ScheduledTask | ? {$_.Actions.Execute -imatch 'defrag'} | ft TaskPath, TaskName, State -auto

    If that shows any tasks, post the output or a screenshot of the output.

    This is the only other option I can think of, because I cannot find any setting or registry entry that is causing the Disk Defrag service to be running in the background.

    You could try taking ownership of that file so you can rename it using the Take Ownership process on this link:

    got into safe mode, tried to rename dfrgui.exe as dfrgui.old, but got failure pop up, saying I did not have the access and only 'trusted installer' could change the file.

    Thank you for that screenshot, that indicates there is no entry in your registry causing that service to start and run constantly in the background, this is a real mystery.

    Boot your PC into Safe Mode

    Open File Explorer, then go to this folder:

    C:\Windows\System32

    Scroll down to find: dfrgui.exe

    Right click that file and select Rename, then rename it to dfrgui.old

    Restart your PC

    Then wait to test if the defrag service is running or if you get any error about that service.
