    January 2025 - Windows 10 vs Windows 11

Looking at the registry keys on both systems at: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Device Metadata

This key is the same on both systems: DeviceMetadataServiceURL = https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=2257403&clcid=0x409

And on both Windows 10 & 11, the URL produces the same result: Service unavailable. Please try again later.

On Windows 10, this error is still being actively generated.

However, on the Windows 11 system, the last error seen here was generated on 2024-11-01 7:58:39PM.

Comparing the lists between the two platforms, Windows 11 has a new second last key in the list:

It seems that this new key may be why this Windows 11 system is not longer reacting badly to the nonfunctional URL.

    Hi Ankit,

I have an enterprise support case open with Microsoft but, still no solution. I demonstrated during a Teams meeting, for a room full of engineers, how disabling "Automatic downloading of manufacturers' apps and custom icons for your devices", located with the "Device Installation Settings" button, under the Hardware tab of the Advanced Systems Settings (System Properties) (Accessible from the Config-System-About screen), stopped delaying our print queues for 3 to 4 minutes when adding or deleting them. This issue also affects many other things. Microsoft has labeled the DISABLE option with this: "Your device might not work as expected".

Turn off Metadata Staging while the Microsoft Metadata Staging servers remain offline. It is unknown when these servers will be back online, if ever. They have been down since late November.

Despite the fact that the thread was started on December 8, 2023, the problem itself already exists for long time. Just by searching the web you can see that from time to time Microsoft screwing up that URL again and again, and to fix it it takes up to half year.

As for me this is a clear indication of how Microsoft is dealing with QA and its attitude towards clients.

I would like to see at some point that Linux is reaching the level that will allow to throw that windows garbage away and forget about it ... but unfortunately looks like we will never see that. :(

    Hi all,

I opened an enterprise ticket for [Adding or removing printers takes too long!!! "Device setup in progress"] using my organization's support contract and we'll see if this can get fixed faster for Planet Earth. <fingers crossed>
