In the future before doing a cumulative update I will make a full system image. If the update fails I will install the saved image, set update to pause for 2 or 3 weeks & follow the forums to see what genius’s like Ramesh come up with before repeating a long list of fruitless attempts over 2 days. When I contacted HP to see if they had any ideas their go to was to re-install windows. I had just finished a week ago getting everything back in order from having done that on the same computer a couple weeks ago. Last comment, my new HP laptop had no issue updating.

Had this issue pop up again today. I tried this first. Deleteng $WinREAgent folder and rebooting had no change.

    did dism + sfc /scannow

Only thing that worked was logging in as local admin (which for some reason allows taskbar/start menu/no crashing) and running windows update again and having feb cumulative install which took hours. Rebooted and my user was able to login and use her laptop again.

I get that this solution may work next time, but do we have any idea on how to prevent this from happening. My CIO is asking questions I do not have an answer to outside of (idk windows messes up sometimes) which isnt good enough. Our job is to fix and prevent issues, they happen all the time but not a complete work stoppage due to a monthly update, from Microsoft for a Microsoft product no less.

My go to "windows update corrupted some system files" excuse isnt working because dec/jan update had major issues as well, error during download and constantly reverting back to previous version....redownload.....revert....causing 2 hour reboots.
