Thanks for your response . Your not the first to state "it isn't a good idea to leave an original and cloned version of a drive on the same system". All my previous desktops from Windows 7 onwards had dual HDD's/SSD's installed providing boot and image. It's only now (windows 11) that I've had any problems.
Ran bcdedit and result is:
Can't say I understand what I'm looking at. for example, the bootmgr identifier device states 'HarddiskVolume5' - Volume 5 ?
I also assume it is using C:/ bootloader (drive 0)
As previously advised, why I thought both disk were involved in the loading windows 11 OS is that both disks have be connected. If I disconnect the 'image' drive (1), boot fails. Both must be connected for successful boot. I'm at a loss to see/understand which drive (0 or 1) is being for boot from the above and why it fails if drive 1 is disconnected
