Update to win 11 22h2 always fails

Hello everyone,

I'm having issues with Windows 11 update and can't complete the update by any means. The system is prompting me with two updates for

  • Windows 11, version 22H2
  • 2024-10 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for x64-based Windows 11, version 22H2 (KB5044033)

The former goes through a long download and reboot each time, and ends up with the error code “Installation Error - 0xc1900101”.

The latter fails to install within a few minutes with “Installation Error - 0x80070057”.

My computer configuration

  • CPU:14900K
  • GPU:AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX(24GB)
  • Memory:Corsair Memory 192 GB DDR5 4000MHz(48GB×4)
  • SSD: SOLIDIGM SSD 2T
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z790 AERO G

All of my hardware drivers as well as the motherboard's BIOS version have been updated to the latest version and I have not installed any third party antivirus software, I have been trying for three months now and have not had a single success installing the update, the system version is now stuck on version number 22621.4391, I have tried almost every troubleshooting step I can find and none of them have solved the problem.

Here's what I've tried so far:

  1. Upgraded in-place using the installer, but the update problem persists.
  2. Windows Update Troubleshooter: ran the troubleshooter, but the update issue persists.
  3. Went to the motherboard manufacturer's official website to download all the official versions of the drivers and override the installation, but the update issue still exists.
  4. Go to the Microsoft® Update Catalog website to download the corresponding version of the patch package, but the installation still fails.
  5. Using the ISO file to install with personal applications and data preserved prompts The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation
  6. Disable Defender and perform a strict clean boot while staying offline, but the update issue persists.
  7. Running the System File Checker (sfc /scannow) from a command prompt, restarting services, deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder, using DISM to repair Windows Update corruption, etc., but the update problem persists.
  8. Running on a single memory stick, removing the graphics card, connecting to a single monitor using only the core graphics, removing all peripheral USB devices, and keeping only the necessary mouse and keyboard connections, but the update problem persists.

I uploaded the Windows installer log file generated by SetupDiag.exe, and the setuperr.log in the C:$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther directory

    Hi John,

Looks like the CBS archives are lost. The log starts from "2024-10-29 21:42:48" which is insufficient.

So, please attempt to install "KB5044033" and let it fail. Then, share the latest CBS logs.

(Will look into the Farbar logs. Thanks.)

    Hi Ramesh.

Thank you for your quick and professional reply, unfortunately there seems to be only one CBS.log file in my CBS folder and no other .log and .cab files, but just to be on the safe side I re-uploaded a new copy of the CBS folder, then I scanned my computer using Farbar as you suggested and compressed and uploaded the FRST.txt and Addition. txt both logs compressed and uploaded, links to all files are attached at the end.

    Thank you for your time.

    Hi John,

Thanks for the log. The COMPONENTS hive is good; there are no malformed entries.

    1. Please zip all the .log and .cab files in the CBS folder and share them.
    2. Run the Farbar Scanner and share your logs.
    1. Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool 64-bit (FRST64.exe)

    https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farba...

Note: If Microsoft Edge or Chrome mislabels the Farbar Scanner executable as PUA/malware, choose to keep it by tapping … in the bottom bar, choosing Keep, and then choosing Keep anyway in the dialog that appears. See this screenshot: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/me...

    1. If the OS language is non-English, rename FRST64.exe to FRST64English.exe.
    2. Run the program. Don't check or uncheck any options. Click "Scan".
    3. Zip the two logs, FRST.txt and Addition.txt, upload them to your OneDrive and share the link here.
