Both my Desktop and Laptop are suffering the same problem when attempting to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Operating system is Windows 11 24H2 with all updates applied to 11 December 2024 including KB5048667. After going through to the point where the troubleshooter runs, I get "I'm sorry. I was unable to run the Windows Update diagnostic. I might need to transfer you to an agent to help solve your problem." I've done all the obvious (sfc, DISM) and no problems were found. I'm thinking it must be a generic problem as it happens on both my Windows 11 machines.

I get Error Code 0x80073712
two-three times a year Windows update fails.

2025-01-28T22:16:06+00:00 Had exactly the same problem on an HP laptop. Wasted a lot of my valuable time with it. Like others, I cannot run the update troubleshooter.
I note:
Error messages are cryptic and vastly inadequate - or in this case, non-existent, other than saying the diagnostic can't run, making definitive diagnosis and treatment impossible.
What I see here appears to be suggested trial and error experiments based on speculation and guesswork.
When encountering something that can't run, I wonder why the operating system cannot produce significant error messages as to why.

2025-01-28T05:45:38+00:00 I am also having this issue whereby Windows Update Troubleshooter fails to run diagnostic. I have reported the problem to Feedback Hub and we all should to ensure that it gets fixed promptly. Microsoft recently transitioned to the new troubleshooters found in Get Help app. In my opinion, the traditional troubleshooters were way better as they were functional and gave more detailed information if a problem was found and took automatic actions. This one has a too simplistic UI.
