Files have a brown box on their icon and dont open in Windows 11

The article located here: https://www.poremsky.com/windows/brown-file-drawer-icon-windows-11/ describes synch files with this box as "offline" but clarifies that Offline means "the file on the hard drive is a link to the online file". I believe this is incorrect and has led to a misinterpretation of the OPs problem. The brown box icon will appear if the FILE_ATTRIBUTE_OFFLINE is on and this should only be on if the file IS on the hard drive and is NOT a link but an actual file. However, it is most likely the OP has fallen victim to a recent shift in policy led by commercial desires in the cloud services industry (2010s-2020s) to drive customer data onto cloud services WITHOUT redundant files saved local to user's machines. Most services did this without the consent of their customers and many users found themselves realizing that most of their files were now only available to them through the cloud. User's can force files back onto local machines, but they often must do so in onerous ways, such as on a file-by-file basis. There was also a high risk of error during transfers of batches of files.

The brown file box logo described would have been applied to file attributes information during the bulk transfer as Windows OS realized large numbers of files previously local to machines were suddenly on file sharing services. If you are not connected to the internet you will not be able to see the file. However, if you decide that you want to eliminate your service contract with the cloud service company, you will soon learn that that is very, very hard to do without spending inordinate amounts of time file transferring and error checking.

What is going on here? There is no information anywhere so it obviously isnt a problem for everyone.

Most of my files stored on Dropbox now have a small brown file box icon on the lower left corner of the main icon for all MS Office files. They open perfectly well on the phone and a laptop running Windows 10 but not on my laptop running Windows 11.

I get an error message saying the program cant open it because the file is unsupported or may be corrupt.

Why the **** do they release an OS that doesn't work with their own programs??

I have this problem too and can't find a solution.

I don't know if this will be helpful, but I went to go click on the right-click the dropbox icon in the system tray to check my sync settings, and the icon wasn't there. I realized that dropbox wasn't "running". I started up dropbox, and once it started running, the brown box was replaced by the appropriate dropbox sync icon (grey cloud, closed green circle+white check, open green circle+green check), and I was able to access those files again. I hope this works for you and everyone else who is having this issue because it was driving me crazy that there were absolutely no posted resolutions to the issue anywhere online.

Thanks, this suggestion solved my problem - Dropbox was not starting on PC startup - I had taken the advice of Norton Utilities and disabled most programmes on startup, assuming it would start when I try to access files, it does not!

I'm so sorry for being dumb, but how do I do that?

I don't see anywhere to change it. Is it in a setting somewhere other than the file?

I seriously would rather bring all my files onto my computer and out of OneDrive. They seem to go into OneDrive randomly, and I can't find them half of the time.

oh ok. As Diane outlined below, the "smart sync" is for Dropbox files. That is the issue I was having. I opted to bring some of my files to "local" and brown box went away. Others that are used less frequently I left as "online only" ... so those still have the brown box letting me know that they are effectively just "shortcuts".
