The new Default App Setting is way to advance and confusing which is unecessary complex for home users. I wanted to change the default file type for Photos and Videos but I there is no jpg, png, mp4 types of file type showing when searching to change it's default app. Also I can't change the default app using explorer open with because the checkbox for always use this app is missing for both Photos and Videos. Also there is no Open with the file property too. Help Me Anyone.

*Moved from Windows 11

Let me 1st say that your idea of "Changing file associations had never been easier" is not shared by me. The old way was much easier and you could change multiple file types at the same time.

Now to the issue. You suggest putting the desired file type in the "Make default association for file type" box, Needless to say there is no such box. In all fairness the format/wording of the box may have changed for no good reason in one of the numerous W11 updates.

However there is a box that does the job as shown above.

Due to your post I revisited the Settings->Apps and was able to make the change for which I thank you.

OOPS - I should have tested it before I wrote the comment. Nothing has changed. I tried again and can't even enter the IrfanView 64-bit entry - I guess I'll have to raise a ticket unless anyone else knows how to change default apps for file types on a vanilla W11 (Oh woe is me to be stuck with W11).

I'm running Windows 11 on a supported device, and I can't change the default for .jpg and .png, either. Both greyed out.
    No association visible.

I paid for windows OS, that doesnt give you the right to load all the bloatware that goes with phone and pother free OSs. like this

plz read the question carefully, before replying. for JPG/PNG etc this obvious solution does not work.

    Only this: Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.Photos -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage does work

    Hi,

I had the same issue as you, and the following command fixed it for me.

    Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.Photos -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage

    Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot, I had to scroll down a lot of comments with useless tips from the 'experts'. Thankfully I did, to find this simple solution that does work!
