3/6/2021 Windows 10 Microsoft Update messed up 2012 Windows Live Essentials (LIVE MAIL) unable to send, unable to read what is received. [Solution]

Last night, 3/6/2021, i received the push notification of a new Microsoft Update for my Windows 10 desktop. The notification stated to restart my pc to install the update.

NO BIG DEAL i thought.

Wrong.

I did a RESTART, and what Microsoft called an UPDATE actually TOOK AN HOUR TO INSTALL .............?

After the INSTALL, back at the Desktop Screen, i was greeted with a message stating "WELCOME TO YOUR NEW WINDOWS OS".... ??????

So, apparently the UPDATE was to install a whole new version of the Windows 10 OS...........

Nice of Microsoft to let me know.

Then i hit the problem.

I went to check my email via Microsoft Windows Live Mail (essential 2012) and this is what happens:

--- Emails DO DOWNLOAD on all of my accounts, AOL, AT&T, and GMAIL... (but download only)

--- By "DOWNLOAD ONLY" i mean that NONE OF THE NEW EMAILS CAN ACTUALLY BE READ......

--- All new emails state "MESSAGE COULD NOT BE DISPLAYED" "MESSAGE COULD NOT BE WRITTEN TO DISK"

As you can see from above, the net result of last nights UPDATE / OS INSTALL

shut down my Microsoft Windows Live Mail.

I can download "blank" messages but i cannot read them.
I cannot SEND any messages at all via AOL, AT&T, or Gmail.

I tried to do a system restore, but the "UPDATE / OS INSTALL" from last night

DELETED ALL OF THE SYSTEM RESTORE POINTS PRIOR TO LAST NIGHT,

AND DOES NOT GIVE A RESTORE POINT FOR LAST NIGHTS UPDATE ...........??????

I then tried to REPAIR Windows Live Mail using the executable WLARP.EXE

in the Windows Live Installer folder. NO CHANGE. IT FAILED TO RESOLVE

THE PROBLEM.

I then restarted the pc multiple times. No Change.

I then spent 3 hours scouring the internet looking for an answer...

What i found is that this happened A LOT over the last few days............

Many people complaining about Windows Live Mail being disabled by the

March 2021 Windows 10 Update.

Finally, I FOUND THE FIX...........

Here is the fix..........

To fix Windows Live Mail in Windows 10 v2004 and higher, follow these steps:

Close the Windows Live Mail window.
Start the Registry Editor (regedit.exe)

In the Registry Editor, go to the following branch:

 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

Create the following DWORD values and set the data for each value to 1.

 Value name: RecreateFolderIndex
 Value type: REG_DWORD
 Value data: 1

 Value name: RecreateStreamIndex
 Value type: REG_DWORD
 Value data: 1

 Value name: RecreateUIDLIndex
 Value type: REG_DWORD
 Value data: 1

When you restart WLM it always changes the value back to 0

Good luck. The registry really isn't that hard to adjust.

Just go to the START button, and type REGEDIT.EXE in the search box.

Click on the REGEDIT.EXE file name that appears.

A dialog box will open that is called REGISTRY EDITOR

...  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail . is where you need to go in the registry.

to get there once the REGISTRY EDITOR dialog box is open :

- click the arrow to the left of HKEY_CURRENT_USER and a dropdown menu appears..
  in that dropdown menu :
- click the arrow to the left of SOFTWARE and a dropdown menu appears..
  in that dropdown menu :
- click the arrow to the left of MICROSOFT and a dropdown menu appears..
  in that dropdown menu :
- click on,  AND HIGHLIGHT, the option WINDOWS LIVE MAIL and a dropdown menu appears to the RIGHT.

this is the tricky part.....

- with the WINDOWS LIVE MAIL option highlighted by your clicking on it:

- go to the UPPER LEFT TOP OF THE REGISTRY EDITOR PAGE and click on the EDIT tab and a dropdown menu 
  appears..
  in that dropdown menu :

- click on NEW and a dropdown menu appears to the right
  in that dropdown menu :

- click on DWORD (32-bit) VALUE

A NEW BLUE-HIGHLIGHTED OPTION WILL OPEN TO THE RIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN IN THE 
WINDOWS LIVE MAIL DROPDOWN.

the new option will normally be named NEW VALUE #1..

- double-click on the new option NEW VALUE #1 and a small dialog box will open on your desktop..

- the dialog box will be called EDIT DWORD (32-BIT) VALUE..

- IN THIS DIALOG BOX,  INSERT THE "D-WORD" DATA AS STATED ABOVE, AND HIT THE "OK" BUTTON.

- then do this same process to create the other two new DWORDS,  as there are 3 in total.

- then hit the upper right page X to kill the registry editor.

- then restart WINDOWS LIVE MAIL and you should be able to read your emails again.

I would appreciate if you can expand in how to "Create the following DWORD values and set the data for each value to 1"

I found the 3 Value Names you made reference to and tried to change their related value data to 1 and saved them. However when I restarted Live mail the values were back to zero.

As a newbie, can you please detail the method to recreate the related DWORDS ( I will back up the registry before performing any action).
