File History Does Not Work

Hi,

For the past few days, File History on my Windows 10 Home (20H2) has stopped working.

In Settings, "Back up options" opens after a noticeable delay and displays the size of my back-up as zero bytes with the message' "Your data is not yet backed up".

On clicking "Back up Now", a "Cancel" button appears after a few seconds with no back up having taken place.

On clicking "Advanced options" and clicking on "Run Now", an error message gets displayed, "We can't copy files to your File History Drive; Failed to initiate user data back-up (Error 80070005)".

I had even contacted MS Support (tier 1) and gone through a remote PC access session but the problem persists.

I'd be grateful to receive advice.

    Interesting read. I take an interest in backup.

    I was not familiar with Windows 10 "File History".

    I use the "Backup and Restore (Windows 7)" tool.  I've thrown hardware at the problem (SAS/SATA LSI-Broadcome MegaRAID storage controller) and a brand new SAS 12Gbps hard drive. It's unbelievably fast.  Until very recently, for the last several years I've run a USB-3.0 external SATA III drive.

    I do my important files and libraries followed by a full system image. It's always a full backup, I guess.

    But, I just backed up 536GB(total backup size) in 13 minutes!  And I have restored completely bare metal in a test from one of these image backups using a Windows 10 OS-recovery USB stick. It works flawlessly. I believed in it so much that deleted my C:\ partitions. Ruined everything first.

    I feel like I've obviated the need for incremental backups ever.

    I call windows 7 backup at will with the "sdclt" command in the Run prompt.

    The "deprecated", "it doesn't do XYZ pi Q t 156#@!~" older backup and restore utility works flawlessly with the hardware.

    And I use bit locker encryption of the whole backup SAS drive.  SAS is king.

    Thanks for sharing.  I saw your April 14th post and I had hope.  Actually updated to 21H1 but to no avail.  MS not  wanting to replace File History...probably because they prefer that we backup to OneDrive and forever pay.

    So sad.

    Hi, it did work for me up to mid April (see my post on April 14th).

    Unfortunately  it stopped working after a further W10 update (probably cumulative April update) ! I tried to play with several fhcfg.dll file versions, as before (see above), to no avail...

    Feeling tired...

    I cannot get File History to work as yet...and I am up-to-date on Windows 10.  My data file appears but it is empty--as before.

    Any thoughts?  For some reason, File History will not work in creating something from scratch or from a previous bbackup.

    Help please.
