Windows 10S Brother printer DCP-195C will not work

Did you install the patch for version 2004 and it still didn't resolve the problem.

Having finally got my Brother DCP-197C printing again after hours (days) of frustration, de-installing and re-installing printer drivers and software; only to find out that the problem was due to Microsoft Windows 10 Updates; I decided not to risk going backwards by installing a patch from (who?) "Microsoft" to solve a "Microsoft" caused problem.

My printer is working again now and I would rather have a reliable printer until the end of my Windows Update delay period (end of July); then I will allow Windows 10 Update to install all past updates; and if the printer fix patch is not included in that I will install it manually.

Basically, what I have got now works, thanks to the advice in these posts (why go backwards?).

I have the exam problem since the update, really bad timing, the week I am publishing my thesis,

The printed now moved to 'unspecified' device

Don't worry about the "Unspecified Device" listing of your printer; the printer should still show up as the Default (or other choice) printer when you start to print, and the printer should print if you de-install the Windows Updates mentioned in these posts.

If you are printing a Thesis, just focus on the printing (not where Windows 10 is listing your printer). And when you get your printer printing, TURN OFF any future Windows Updates for the maximum allowed period to stop another overnight update and ensure that you can continue to print next morning...

Microsoft do need to sort out the "Unspecified Device" issue, where a printer is not appearing as an 'actual' printer but as an apparent "Unspecified Device"; which seems to be due to Windows 10 not recognizing perfectly OK (legacy) printer drivers. But that is a less important issue than not being able to print at all due a Windows Update.

My printer has also stopped printing.

I followed the steps to uninstall the updates, and an error box popped up saying it wasn't installed. This happened for both updates.

I then went through the steps suggested on the brother website. I went to the microsoft site and downloaded the update. Then went to install it and it said it wouldnt work on my machine (windows 10). I tried the other 2 files just incase and had the same error.

I've emailed brother to see if they can help.

Also hoping that someone may have a suggestion for me on here? thanks in advance

My printer is a Brother DCP-197C and before I read about the Windows 10 Update 'stopping printing' issue, I downloaded the latest device drivers and printer software (DCP-197C on Windows 10) from the Brother website. I followed the Brother website instructions to uninstall all of the previous Brother printer software, including the device driver(s), and started from scratch; everything is reinstalled, so I know that my printer software is up to date. BUT the Brother DCP-197C still would not work and that is when I trawled the internet and found these posts about the Windows 10 Update 'stopping printing' issue. De-installing the Windows Update, following the advice in these posts, solved my problem BUT all my printer software is now up to date.

You might want to do the same thing; de-install the driver(s) and software for your printer, then re-install the latest Windows 10 versions from the Brother website to see if this solves your problem on Windows 10.

There may also be a third Windows 10 Update, not mentioned in these posts yet, that is causing perfectly OK printers to stop printing.

i have the same issue and have uninstalled this update many times because no matter how often i uninstall it, a few days later it is automatically reinstalled.  I switched off updates until end of July just like you but then Jack sent a link to the Microsoft Update Catalogue where a fix had been listed but had to be installed via this link, then the update would not be reinstalled.  However, for me this did not work, i clicked on the relevant system for me but nothing at all happened, no matter how long i waited.  Here is the link in case it helps you

what is even more annoying is Microsoft listing this error as ‘Fixed’ with this update !!!!  Well oh no it isnt!!
