OK, I don't give up easy, and I think I have now solved the problem just by uninstalling the $&@# update that caused the problem in the first place. Not sure this is a permanent solution because I'm pretty sure Microsoft will try to force me to reinstall at some point, but for now I'm back to where I was.
Go to Settings on your computer
Select "Update & Security"
Click "View update history"
Click "Uninstall updates" (at the top of the page)
Select the update you want to uninstall
If the update is uninstallable (not all are) the option to "uninstall" will appear to the right of the word "Organize" on theh menu bar. Click this.
Note -- I had to uninstall not only the Windows update but one of the security updates that occurred at the same time.
