Windows 10 says I have no internet connection, but I have.

I am running on Windows 10 Enterprise, Version 2004, OS Build 19041.264.

I recently changed to the Windows Insider Program and updated Windows. In the taskbar, the Wi-Fi icon shows No Internet Access, but I have a stable internet connection wirelessly (Ex: I can browse the internet, ping IP Addresses, etc.). Another problem is when I try to open Cortana it also says that I have no internet connection (By the way, I can also open Microsoft's website).

As I know Windows checks internet connectivity with this URL: http://msftconnecttest.com/connecttest.txt. But this gives Error 404, File Not Found. Maybe it is because of this?

If you know the problem or an answer, please help. Thanks!

Hello, use Registry Editor, go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet

and modify: EnableActiveProbing

then change "Value data" from "0" to "1"

and restart your computer

The proper one is

"HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetworkConnectivityStatusIndicator\” -Name UseGlobalDNS -PropertyType DWORD -Value 1 -Force

But the more appropriate way to do this is not through registry directly, but through group policy config:

The way I solved this :

Run gpedit.msc

"Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Network Connectivity Status Indicator".

Enable the 'Specify Global DNS' setting, then run gpupdate /force. Note, a reboot is required to clear the existing issue.

A particular NCSI problem scenario is solved by enabling this policy.

This policy helps in situations where a third party product installs a loopback DNS listener to catch and forward DNS queries on 127.0.0.1. NCSI natively does not handle DNS active probes intercepted and forwarded on the loopback adapter. This policy changes that so it does.

Products like Cisco Umbrella, Zscaler, F5 Big IP install such DNS loopback filters.

This however may not be OP's scenario.

NCSI is a component that has many root causes based on environmental factors that all bubble up to the same user-observed symptoms, i.e. taskbar icon showing no internet when there actually is internet, or various apps like Office/Skype/Teams/third party giving network error. So on the top the issue looks the same to everyone. Underneath the root cause can be very different.

I tried everything mentioned in this thread without any consistent success.

And then the issue was resolved when I changed DNS server address to Google's one (8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4). I know it is surprisingly simple solution but it seems that certain ISPs also block the Windows connection probing.

I don't know why, but my problem is resolved if I check obtain DNS Address automatically in Network Connection (ncpa.cpl). but if I check use DNS Address to 127.0.0.1 for example for Acrylic DNS Proxy An internet connection says "no Internet, Secured" 🤔

My Windows 10 May 2020 Update Version 2004 Pro Edition. Build 19041,331. previously I did not experience this problem in Windows 10 November 2019 Update.
