Microsoft store won't let me install apps on my D:\ drive

So I was trying out the Xbox Game Pass for PC and I was going to install Sea Of Theives and Astroneer.

I first downloaded Astroneer to my C:\ (my ssd) and it worked out because it is around 3 GB it fit.

However, when I was going to install Sea Of Theives I had to change my default drive from C:\ to D:\ (my hdd) because I couldn't fit it on my ssd.

It downloaded fine, but when it was trying to install the game, it just stopped and said "Error" instead on installing. Then instead of the "Play" button there is a button called "See details". When I clicked it, a popup comes up saying: "Something unexpected happened. Reporting this problem will help us understand it better. You can wait for a while and try again or restart your device. That may help. Code: 0x80070005"

That is the code for "Access denied" which is strange, why wouldn't Microsoft Store have access to install apps on my computer?

I have tried updating windows to the latest update, I have reset the Microsoft Store and I have tried to give the group "Everyone" access to the folder that Microsoft Store is installing in. Without any success.

To summarise, I can install apps from Microsoft Store to my C:\ drive (ssd), but not to my D:\ (hdd). It downloads fine, but when it tries to install I get the following error: "Something unexpected happened. Reporting this problem will help us understand it better. You can wait for a while and try again or restart your device. That may help. Code: 0x80070005".

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi Erik,

Please rename the folder WindowsApps in Drive D to WindowsApps.old, restart your computer, It should work after renaming it.

    You have to reformat the drive to NTFS it's probably currently exFAT. Plenty of tutorials to be found via Google. Just search for format drive to NTFS.

    Yeah. I have my C drive (boot/windows) and D drive (storage/games).

    I can now install Microsoft Store games on my D drive but they often have issues launching that only go away when I uninstall the game and reinstall it on my C drive.

    Why is Windows so stubborn about having to have games installed on the Windows drive? It even creates a hidden virtual drive for each and every one.

    Just about any other game publisher lets you install to whatever drive you want, without insisting that it be your OS drive.

    As I mentioned though, I can now install to D but it's not without it's problems.

    what i did was go into my setting>system>storage>change where content is saved select the drop down for apps and select the drive you want to install on. Now go into the microsoft store go to the games store page and select the three dots next to the install button and select that option and it should connect to your pc and automatically download to the drive you previously selected. 

    Note- sometimes when i tried the 3 dot menu it would just be a black box and not worked but i came back later and it did so im not sure but just thought i would include that aswell i hope this can help someone because this was a very big issue for me.

    Im not sure why but this actually worked. 

    It did also change my boot up sequence to startup on D which doesnt have windows on it. I did **** my pants a little thinking it destroyed my computer but with a restart and spamming F2 i realised that it changed my boot up.. Not sure why it did that but i'm not happy downloading Forza Horizon 4..
