Windows 10 100 % disk usage

I fought this battle for a long time, tried every fix on the web I could find...IE turn off superfetch, 14 Tricks to Solve 100% Drive Usage in Windows 10, change this setting in the registry, etc, etc.  Even bought a new hard drive..nothing worked.  My machine has 3 internal drives plus 2 external...mostly occurred on one drive, but the issue would float to others now and then.

I'm a coder and working with computers since DOS/1982, so have a reasonably good command...this issue haunted me.  Drive would show 100% in Task Manager with 0 bits of data transfer, lock up the machine for 1 or 2 minutes, work right for a little while, sometimes only 5 min, sometimes hours.  I ran Check in the Tools under Properties, CHKDSK in CMD...nothing worked.

Here's what my issue was that NO post I read ever mentioned....BAD POWER SUPPLY.  Makes no sense to me, but my power supply started shutting off in the middle of my work....then would work after a short rest (for a while), then turn off again.  Put up with that for a day than replaced it and low and behold...everyone of my drives are working like they should...I AM AMAZED!  AND VERY HAPPY! Posting this in case it helps someone.

Hello I am not a Microsoft technician but I repair pcs and this is the most common problem I have faced with windows 10.My most regular solution to this problem is Privacy settings and disable the background processes.

I have the same problem on 2 HP laptops. I don't understand the Power Supply fix, there are so many Windows 10 users with this problem that makes me believe that the power supply fix is a red herring. (Unless the latest windows update has found a way to break power supplies!).

I have worked through many "solutions" found on the web, (except the power supply as it is a little more difficult with a laptop). I have change disk drives, re-installed windows but so far nothing has worked for any length of time.

Come on Microsoft, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fix your software. I am seriously thinking about ditching Windows for Linux due to this problem.

I've been dealing with the 100% disk usage problem for over 2 years.  It gets "fixed", only to happen again a few months later.  It has rendered my computer completely idol while downloading updates to "install" in the non active hours.  But the download itself happens at any time during the day, (usually when I need my computer), and takes my computer hostage while it hangs.  I have a job ticket in for an advanced tech for this coming Saturday.  But I admit, I don't think they will be able to ever fix it.  I'm quite disappointed.

I did finally find my culprit after trying all the 12 steps of (superfetch, defender off,

resetting

That fixed it for 3 weeks

Now April 29 2020: I downloaded a program -  Microsoft Windows "process explorer" downloads and select - unzip file and save to desktop. Open program and select 'view' and click on 'select columns' (bottom choice) -  I clicked top of window page 'Process I/O' and 'check' write bytes and read bytes - then on top of same window page select 'Process disk' 'check' write, read, write bytes, read bytes. click on graph I tightened the columns and looks for the program that gave me the most MB used in the left columns. I found a svchost.exe that was using 89MB and 34.7MB - under PID it was 2684 I suspended this line by right clicking on it and selecting suspend. When I right clicked on host process it says Xbox - I had taskmanager open at the same time so I coould see the usage dropped to 1-4% now - it's slow to open Chrome on CPU but works good after it's loaded.
