To view HEIC/HEIF file on Windows 10 PC, the following 4 requirements are necessary.

  1. Update Windows 10 to 1809 or later
  2. In Microsoft Store, get the 'Microsoft Photos' (Released by Microsoft and Free) , and set it as Windows Default Photo Viewer
  3. In Microsoft Store, get the 'HEIF Image Extensions' (Released by Microsoft and Free)
  4. In Microsoft Store, get the 'HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer' (Released by Microsoft and Free)

Please note, there are 2 versions of 'HEVC Video Extensions', one you have to pay for $1, another is free, get the free one from the following URL:

CAN SOMEONE MAKE THIS A STICKY??? (4th time of posting...)

There is a FREE - as in NO

COST, NO BITCOINS (of any value), no Dollars. ****

FREE Codec Here:

Codecs.com | Downloads

for HEVC Video Extension 1.0.41483

even though it SAYS 'Video', this enables HEIC support in

Windows.

again:

FREE Codec at:Codecs.com | Downloads for HEVC Video Extension 1.0.41483

(free-codecs.com)

(I have no association with codecs.com, just trying to help...)

Ian Shen's advice also worked for me!!! Thank you so much Ian. Microsoft two things here. 1. this functionality should be included in the OS. The fact that we have to search for extensions in the store and download them is terrible. Why make me do this? Your average user won't know to do this and will be dissatisfied with your product. This is why apple and others win customers over from you. You also risk your customers downloading or paying for garbage that may even harm their system. 2. The fact that Ian's  correct version of HEVC cannot be found in by just searching for HEVC is also terrible. In fact when I searched for that exact name it didnt come up. I had to instead use the link he provided. Also a terrible practice. Ian could have just infected my machine. You put me at risk and make me take unnecessary steps to make this work. Boo MS!

found the solution on website: https://dries.metrico.be/2021/01/21/no-longer-free-windows-10-hevc-video-extensions-from-device-manufacturer/

Copy/paste this link into the browser:

    ms-windows-store://pdp/?ProductId=9n4wgh0z6vhq

Or, open command prompt, and type/paste:
    start ms-windows-store://pdp/?ProductId=9n4wgh0z6vhq

    Click "Install".
