What about the other question? Does it give a chance to back out of the install past the first 3.5 minutes?

You can just back out when it asks you if you want to keep the existing files and programs.

If you go ahead with the upgrade you will have build 18362.175 in the recovery OS command prompt  instead of 18362.30.

After the upgrade your running system will still be up at 18362.207 anyway, it is like doing a refresh....

My system is currently 18362.207, & that is what shows at a Command Prompt when booted to Windows.

My upgrade 1809 > 1903 was from MediaCreationTool1903.exe when it downloaded 18362.30. Right, the Command Prompt got by Shift+Restart [same as "START, Settings, Update & Security, Recovery, Restart now (under Advanced Startup)"] shows 18362.30. That's a boot to the Recovery Partition (as opposed to the Installation media's "repair your computer").

Looks like you are saying - if I use MediaCreationTool1903.exe to make Installation media now - it will make one that is 18362.175. Well, Pauli O verified that much. Furthermore, you say - if I use it to over-install my current system - Shift+Restart will get to a Command Prompt that shows 18362.175. I guess that does make sense. Maybe it does even more than that.

I guess tomorrow I'll make the new media - & I'll do the upgrade-install too. Thanks.

I expect - if I use it to enter its recovery environment (repair your computer) - its Command Prompt will show 170 whether or not I do the upgrade.

Are you saying - if I do the upgrade - the onboard recovery environment (Shift+Restart) would also show 170?

No the recovery environment cmd prompt will show 18362.30 unless you upgrade using 18362.175.

Even if your system is up to 18362.207, the recovery environment depends on the installation media that your used for the upgrade. 

If you upgraded with windows update, the recovery environment will show 18362.1 in the command prompt.

If you go to windows update and click on recovery then restart..

Then select troubleshooting and go to command prompt. You will see the level there

Media creation tool isn't updated immediately. It might take a while for the fix to get it corrected in the installation media. In your case, would suggest you to copy the installation media to the hard drive and then manually update after removing the SD Card/USB Stick.

I'm running it now, but I expect the Properties of Setup.exe on the Installation USB it creates to be the same as above: 10.0.18362.1. If I am wrong & it turns out to be as you said, then I will feel more confident to apply it to my 1809. I am more & more impatient for it to arrive through Windows Update.

But I don't know what has to be fixed to make the USB problem go away.

(a) Is it indeed 1903's Setup.exe?

     Then when/how will they tell us they made one that works? Will its Properties show it?

(b) Or is it the installation to which 1903 is being applied?

     You are applying it (doing an over-install) to 1903 that has the fix (KB4497935). So it should have worked.

Oops. Here's what I got...

I'm going to reboot & try again. After that, I'll look up the error code. And I'm only trying to create an Installation USB at this point!

Edit: It took 3 tries to create that thing. Here is its Setup.exe...

So - if it takes a change to Setup.exe to fix the USB problem - I don't see that it's been done yet. Is there another way to know whether they've made a change to it? Is the one you are using the same size of 72.1 KB?

But I haven't tried the upgrade yet & don't know whether this computer will have that problem in the first place.
