Gary & Szilard, I don't know how to reply. I'm feeling sad & desperate. Gary, I think in your 2nd sentence you meant to say "If the phone isn't running now …." and not "If the phone is running now ….", right?
Gary, also when you say "Next time through WDRT use Not Detected and Lumia.
Do not try to restore", when I click Lumia it always says on the next screen:
CONNECT YOUR DEVICE - WAITING FOR CONNECTION.
DEVICE COULD NOT BE FOUND. PLEASE TRY TO REBOOT YOUR DEVICE BY PRESSING 'POWER' & 'VOLUME DOWN' A THE SAME TIME. KEEP THE BUTTONS PRESSED UNTIL THE DEVICE VIBRATES.
Then as I'm sure you know, it finds it and pops

So, once again I just clicked on that to start the installation (been thru this so many times that I know it by heart.

Downloading package, battery better be at least 25%, Switching the device to flashing mode …
OPERATION ENDED WITH FAILURE. Please try restarting your device (that's impossible) and try again. [FINISH]
I've seen this a few times before and it never happens twice in a row. So, I'll go thru it all again and rejoin where it should have gone to next, which I've also seen a few times.
So, I'm back at the Device Info page with the [INSTALL SOFTWARE] button on it. Click.
Software package installation progress bar is showing on WDRT and phone is red screen showing the Installing Software progress too. (It did this the first time but I forgot to mention it).
This time, as it always does, it says

√ Operation successfully completed.

A File Explorer just popped on the PC with Phone in the Windows Phone folder hilited and displayed.
The phone is of course now wanting to be setup with Language, Country, Time Zone, Connect to Wi-Fi, all of which I did.
On the GET GOING FAST, I did Customize and turned OFF Skype since I don't want to use it in the Texting (Messaging) which I've seen it do on these Resets. I don't like that.
On the next page, "Keep your life in sync", it makes me give it my outlook.com email address. For some reason the next page is filled in with my cell phone # in the Microsoft Account box so I replace it with my outlook.com address & password.
NOW HERE'S WHERE I THING YOU'RE TELLING ME TO TAP "DON'T RESTORE", right?
I want you to tell me for sure that's what you want me to do. I'd thought myself of doing this but I'm pretty sure that it will then make it's own Backup of a clean phone which it will overwrite over the top of my saved Backup. If that's the case, I guess
I'm then into total rebuilding mode with my many notes, emails, lists, postings and PrintScreens.
I see you talking about letting it just install the APPs and leaving it alone. I'm pretty sure that won't be happening at all if I don't restore any backup, right? Or am I missing something?
Lastly, you said something that doesn't seem right to me about Soft Resets. You said "
Power, volume down is a soft reset. Have no idea why you were using that." and I've always thought a Soft Reset is holding the Power & Volume Up. I thought holding the Power & Volume Down does a Hard Reset. Am I totally wrong?
Anyway, thanks for your help, both of you. I'll just leave my phone on the Restore Phone page showing:

DON'T RESTORE
Start fresh with your phone
Hopefully my phone will still be on this screen tomorrow and that I'll be able to wake it up with the Power button so I don't need to do this all again (my 10th time?). I'll be waiting for your answer on, do I just want to tap this DON'T RESTORE?
