Your Phone app shows duplicate sent messages

My Your Phone app is duplicating messages sent, sporadically. This has been happening the past few days. Windows and Your Phone apps have been updated. The duplicates are appearing in my Android texting app (Textra) as well. I have used Pulse, Google Messages, and Samsung Flow previously w/o this occurring.

Windows 10 Pro 1903

Android Pie, standard, non-rooted ROM

'Advisors', please don't ask me to run scannow or complete a repair install...thanks.

Another interesting side effect, though.  If I send a text from my phone, it doesn't show up in the Your Phone interface.  I think it was showing up there before I killed off the Backup & Sync service.

Am I right in thinking that they should be showing up?  I'll have to turn it back on to see I suppose.

I have too many Windows apps not to make that my primary OS, so this Android/Windows 10/Your Phone combination is definitely the right answer for me.  Now that I have a way to manage the dupe issue, It works generally very well.

The thing I need now is RCS support, which supposedly is available now on the S20.  I'm assuming it'll migrate down to my Note 10 soon enough.  I do have an increasing number of contacts that are capable of RCS messaging, and those don't even show up in Your Phone at this point.  I've actually missed a few messages because of that hole.

All moving in the right direction, though.

    Hey @JefferyAndre,

I think you're right about everything, and hope that the level of detail we've been gathering will be helpful to Microsoft.  I'm also prepared to accept that (maybe) there's nothing they can do to fix it, and that they'll simply list known issues with the "system" along with suggestions for people to try.

Regardless of the minor annoyance this provides, we're still much better off than iPhone users, who can't do any of this (due to the lockdown-nature of iOS).

    Hi @Wayne (live.com#ankonaskiff17)"),

No doubt about it, this is quite a puzzle!  As to why it's happening, there's not a lot about the bug that makes sense in the first place; I mean, we're specifically telling the Win10 app to only sync using mobile data, so why would the existence of a possible WiFi connection make any difference?  But, I digress...

I don't have any real suggestions, other than the obvious, which is to verify that this issue can be replicated.  In an odd way, I hope it can, since there are few things worse than saying, "Okay, I can't get it to ever happen again, but I know it happened that one time!!!"  LOL

Happy Wednesday -- stay safe and sane!

    Dave

The WiFi off seems to generally resolve problem but there's some other background issue also.

I have been running with WiFi off and no dupes at all. I periodically have issues with signal either from cell provider (5G ATT) or cable internet provider (Spectrum/TWC) which will prompt me to toggle wifi on or off on occasion.

So I turned on WiFi one evening in bed and since not using laptop, no big deal, dupes not an issue.

Next morning, get up, forgot about WiFi being on, dupes started immediately.

Thinking I know how to fix this, turned WiFi off and dupes continued for some time.

This is a purely speculative thing here but a couple of observations. This was done by sending texts to myself via phone and Your Phone app on laptop.

    • With WiFi off on phone (Samsung Note 9) if I send message via phone SMS TO MYSELF, there is no bounceback message on phone or Your Phone app. It leaves the phone but never returns.
    • With WiFi off on phone and I send a message via the Your Phone laptop app, I see both the outgoing and return message on both phone SMS app which is the Samsung standard app, AND the Your Phone laptop app.

It seems like the Your Phone Companion (phone) app and the Your Phone laptop app maintain some sort of connection that I am at a loss to understand what that connection is, and how it is maintained.

So, right now, I have WiFi OFF on phone, WiFi ON, on laptop, AND BLUETOOTH OFF on both phone and laptop.

How are the two connected if both WiFi and Bluetooth connections are theoretically severed?

I see this in the notification bar that you can make visible by swiping down from top of phone. It acts like a bluetooth connection but the two apps maintained their connection even after I had killed Bluetooth on both phone and laptop.

So how are the two devices connecting and staying connected without WiFi or Bluetooth?
