Windows 10 Acer Swift 3 Nvidia MX150 BSOD Since 1809 upgrade. Still occurring in 1903 upgrade

Below is a description of the problem

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Unfortunately, I have not had a response from someone who can escalate this issue with Microsoft. Long story short, I have had the above laptop since August 2018 which was preinstalled with 1803. The system comes with a i5 8250u, 8GB ram, 250GB M2 SSD and a MX150 Nvidia. The laptop works perfectly on Windows 10 1803 with no BSODs or any error messages. On upgrading to 1809 the system will crash either when installing the nvidia driver or once a game or 3d application has finished using the nvidia GPU. For example, I can run a game for one hour with good temperatures and no graphics abnormalities; everything seems normal. However once the game or photoshop has been closed and I am back on the desktop using the intel GPU, a BSOD VIDEO_DXGKNL_FATAL_ERROR is always shown. This does not happen with 1803, and this does not happen when using a Linux OS.

All different drivers from acer, intel, nvidia have been tried, uninstalled and re-tried. It does not matter which driver I install as they do not fix the problem. This issue that I am experiencing has been discussed on this MS community website, and on the acer forums. The only resolution thus far is to rollback to 1803 where the system is 100% stable. Tonight I decided to read about the new 1903 update that is soon to be released. I am currently signed up to the Windows Insider Program and have updated to the latest preview build. Tonight I have found that the same issue when installing the GPU, or once a application/game has finished using the GPU my system will GSOD / BSOD just like 1809. This issue has been ongoing since 1809 with lots of users posting about this problem when using a google search. I am now currently at a complete loss as the issue does not seem to have been fixed, or had the attention from someone who could possibly put measures in place to fix this. I have disabled the Nvidia GPU in device manager so that I am able to type this post without having tons of BSODs when only a web browser is open. Since I have moved to 1809 and 1903; tonight I have had over 20 BSODs with five of them happening after entering the login pin at the password screen. Once the nvidia gpu is disabled and I am only using the Intel GPU, the system is 100% stable but without the high performance from the nvidia GPU. I really appreciate anyone who can assist me with this further.

The above problem has been reported on a number of Forums, but basically the same problem.

The only known fixes that have worked appear to be to go back to Windows 10 1803, the disable any further Windows updating. Or to disable the Nvidia MX150 device. None of these fixes are a permanent solution for myself.

This problem started with Windows 10 1809 release, and is still a problem with Windows 10 release1903.

Do Microsoft know about this problem? Is it being addressed? Have Microsoft put out any information regarding this problem? When will it be fixed?

Bueno, no funcionó. 2-3 BSOD al día después, por lo que he desactivado la GPU nvidia nuevamente.

Tendremos que esperar a que el soporte de Acer presente una solución.

Hello, I tried to uninstall the physX but it didn't work either, I have an asus with exactly the same combination and the same problem, I will be attentive if a solution arises.

Hey everyone, I got in touch with my local acer support by email and they replied suggesting I roll back the device and if this does not fix the issue, then my next option is to have the laptop repaired. I personally do not believe that this is a repair problem, as this is affecting too many laptops with this same configuration. I suppose that it is possible that these nvidia chips are all faulty from when they were manufactured and the newer windows 10 updates are showing their defectiveness. Anyway I have been reading through another forum post in regards to an ASUS Vivobook that has the same problem with the same nvidia mx150 chip, so other OEMs are experiencing this problem. It seems that all these laptops with this configuration either have a major fault from new, or something has changed with the way the operating system is working with the GPUs in the newer windows 10 update. I played battlefield 4 on my laptop for over 3 hours last weekend and I did not get a single BSOD or error. The moment I closed the game and googled to view the weather for the next day I got a BSOD lol.

It looks like you got in touch with a support agent that is aware of this problem. Thank you for keeping us updated with information, I really hope your enquires with acer will lead to a fix.

@grubertBO I have tried changing the nvidia settings and my laptop lasted a couple of days as well. The other option I have seen suggested elsewhere is by not installing nvidia physx. I have not found this solution to work for long either.

The below may be of some use for everyone with this problem below.

Finally I have found a programme that someone made a few years back, it may be of some use to us. By running the application below; the nvidia GPU is always switched on, but left at an idle state, so in theory the GPU will never be dropped by the system. The only side affect is the battery usage will be slightly increased. The correct implementation of Nvidia Optimus is to switch the GPU on and off when required, however this seems to be when the system will most likely encounter the BSOD, and not when the system is fully using the GPU.

So with this application running and once you have finished your game or using photoshop etc; you will not experience a BSOD when you close the game down. This application gives you time to disable the nvidia GPU in device manager, once you have finished using it. Furthermore with this application you might be able to keep the nvidia GPU running all the time, just be mindful of the battery usage. I am not 100% sure this solution will prevent the BSOD issue occurring, hence why I still like to disable the nvidia GPU after using it. I have not had the time to fully test the method above. If you do consider using this application without disabling the nvidia card each time, please ensure that TrayPwrD3 will be running on your windows 10 start-up applications, or you may encounter a BSOD when at the password/pin screen on your next boot up. This application was not made by nvidia/acer/ms etc so use at your own risk :D :D.

Well, it didn't work. 2-3 BSOD a day afterwards, so have disabled the nvidia GPU again.

We will have to wait for the Acer support to come up with a solution.

I have the same problem, SF315-52G. I have raised the issue with the local Acer support team, hopefully they will communicate it further on, so that we can have a solution. They have my minidumps too.

What I have tried: In NVIDIA control panel 3D settings, change global settings to NVIDIA-processor. Same thing in the PhysX settings, changed to MX150. I'm on stock Intel and NVIDIA graphics drivers, downloaded from Acer.

I'm now on day 5 without any BSOD, having used the laptop for everyday things like Internet, Youtube, Netflix etc., but also gaming (Steam, League of Legends etc.). Even though the battery runtime will take a slight hit because of the constant use of the NVIDIA card, this situation is much better than no NVIDIA grahics at all.

Time will tell if this is a working solution until a permanent fix has been worked out.

I have contacted Microsoft Technical Support regarding this problem. The have told me that the problem is with the Nvidia driver not supporting the 1809/1903 Windows releases. As such the problem is with Acer.

As mentioned earlier by DsEdo, as many people as possible should be reporting the problem to Acer, to put pressure on them to solve the problem.
