Windows 10 October update now available

I automatically logon Windows 10 Home 64-bit with a local account. I updated with the October feature update and hadn't noticed anything wrong. But I haven't rebooted since the initial install reboot. I have a recent backup maybe a week or 2 before the 1809 update, but will backup my newer data files again when I get home from work. Does this only affect data files on the OS drive? My OS drive is an SSD and my data drive (D:) is a mechanical HDD. I backup to an external USB 3.0 drive when attached. Also I remember reading a pre-1809 article saying to make sure your OS drive has at least 30GB free or the update would crash the system. Mine had 70GB free. I have a C:\Windows.old folder since the update but left it alone just in case.

How about giving us more info. For example: if I continue to use Win10 with the October update will it continue to delete files???  How about giving Win10 Home version users the EASY ability to delay the install of ANY update as can be done with Pro and Enterprise versions and all previous versions of Windows. Allow us to find out if there are any bugs before updating.

Not in Old. Not in Documents. Just here: Which made me very happy because close to a terabyte of files were missing including my books, (the pdf files, anyway, Kindle was still available) my movies, tv shows, and old time radio files, AND all my music files...mp3 and FLAC. Bought and ripped. They had just kind of wandered over here from This PC/Documents which was where they were before the update began

BarryG_691 thinks it has something to do with OneDrive and the new "Storage Sense" setting.

At least, he thinks that is why some people's files are disappearing.

I think that makes sense since I don't have the OneDrive app installed at all and I didn't lose files and, while he has the app, he didn't have "Storage Sense" on and he didn't lose any either.

What does everyone else here think?

I installed the Windows 10 October Update last Thursday (the 4th of October) using the Upgrade Assistant and the upgrade went file for me - no files were deleted and it is stable and usable.

I needed to install it, as I am travelling from next week and will only have slow network links to use.  So it's not practical to download a 3.1GB installer in a hotel.

My questions are regarding when the support that I will receive from Microsoft while they sort this out;

• Tomorrow is the October 2018 Patch Tuesday, so will there be a Cumulative Update and other updates made available to this version?
• When Microsoft finally sort this issue out - will the update/fix be made available as a Cumulative Update that can be installed on the initial Build or will it be a new RTM Build?

This situation really isn't on!  This is the second update which has experienced issues and Microsoft have either delayed or retracted due to the RTM builds not being fit for purpose.  Can Microsoft please revert to an update cycle, which provides a quality build that is reliable rather than delivering rubbish on a six month cycle.

Grabbed the ISO on Tuesday 10/2 and have done 4 desktops with DVD in place upgrade and 1 laptop with a msdc in place over 1803 with no problems.  I keep my main data on separate hdd(s) and/or ssd(s); but also utilize the user/documents etc. structure for unimportant files.  Everything ported OK on all systems and I use OneDrive. I guess things are aligned for my systems this week as I usually get hit with these problems; hence the Important Data is always kept on Separate Drive(s) with redundant backups everywhere. Been using 2Brightsparks SynBackFree for Decades.

Exactly. People don't understand the value of backups until they login one day and their drive has crashed and or the OS blew up. I do system images twice a week to a separate drive and my 4TB data drive gets backed up to a WD external 4TB twice a month. That ext drive then gets taken out of the loop so if anything happens to the system where everything is hosed, I still have my ext 4tb drive with all my data intact. I trust manual tactics far more than any automated backup suite. Just my opinion

They sure don't. I save an image once a month, and I keep three months' worth.  And I save one whenever I'm going to be doing a major update/upgrade, such as this.  

I have three PCs, and I ran out of room on my 750GB USB external drive, so I now just save the images from my desktop and laptop on that drive, and for my notebook I save them on the HDD I removed from it when I replaced it with an SSD.  Surprisingly, it works with the USB adapter that came with the SSD .  It's 2.0, so it takes a while, but it works.  With my desktop, I also save its images on a separate internal HDD (in addition to the external USB drive).  A bit redundant with the desktop, but one can never be too careful.
