Epson scanner will not work with latest windows 10 update

Under Windows 10 1803 I sent Epson scan to always run as Administration several months ago and have done hundreds of JPG and PDF (multiple pages) scans without a single lockup since then.  I am apparently now running Windows 10 1809 and the always run as Administrator box is, not by me, unchecked, and I'm still having no scan problems.

Conclusions a) always run as Administrator is a viable fix and b) the underlying Windows issue was fixed in Windows 10 1809

It involves going into the registry and deleting the saved Environment for Epson Scan. On my machine this was: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\EPSON\EPSON Scan\ES013D\Environment

It's mind boggling that something like this that should have a simple fix is still an issue.

Yes, brilliant!! That fixed the problem. Ugh! Took so long to identify that the pop-up interface was off the screen. I thought it was something else and spent a lot of time identifying what that something else is.

• Consult and make sure things work before releasing defective "updates".
• Retain and pay correctly an in-house team of experts that understands both the equipment and the defective operating systems it has to work with.
• Bear in mind that in the modern World, real live people *need* to use their computers and peripherals, for example to avoid being jailed for not paying their taxes. They don't have the means to junk and replace nearly-new equipment with newer items soon to be junked in turn.

Regrettably, it isn't easy to propose alternatives to the short-lived offerings of Epson: my recent HP printer is regularly messed up by Windows updates and they don't even apologise.

Tim, here is a checklist of various things you can try.

1- Make sure you have the latest Win 10 updates after the 1806 update. Later updates may help with this issue.

2- Uninstall the Epson driver you have and reinstall the latest ones from the Epson Website that are suitable for Win 10. If there isn't one for Win 10 then try the nearest one (eg Win 8) If your software has an update driver feature that may help as well.

3- When launching Epson scan right click and select run as administrator. 

4- You could also try running Epson scan in Win 7 or Win 8 compatibility mode. If that fails, switch it back to Win 10 mode. 

4- Try the fix suggested by jonno_123, this involves a registry hack

If all else fails, you will probably still be able to use your scanner using the native Windows WIA feature. Its very limited but it should work.  You can also try the Vuescan scanner driver ($).
