2018-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4103721) windows won't load
This morning woke my Toshiba Satellite c55t-c5300 from hibernation and it did an auto restart do to this update. Windows never loaded after displaying Toshiba it stayed on the black load screen with spinning dots. I had an external monitor and usb
devices attached removed those powered off and on still same thing. Did auto repair still same result. Finally I've just booted into recovery and did a system restore. This time prevented download of update. Was able to prevent restart and schedule a later
date on my other Satellite L455. Debating whether or not I want to go ahead and restart it and see what happens. Now half the day is gone. Step up your game Microsoft.
Update: So I decided to restart my Satellite L455 same outcome stuck on black load screen after restart. Now Before I upgraded from version 1709 to 1803 on both laptops I backed them up and did a fresh start installation keeping my files then updated
to 1803 and everything had been working fine until this cumulative update. On my L455 I have to hit F8 then it does auto repair, but can't auto repair then it gives me advanced options. Tried safe boot nope. Tried 2 different system restores both failed. Now
resetting PC. Now I like windows 10 never had much problems with windows os before, but constantly going between control panel and windows settings and this windows update BS is pissing me off it's about to be time for going full on Linux.
Final Update: Both laptops are fully updated now. 3rd party apps were the problem disable your third party apps and you should be good to go.
I have to backtrack on my final update comment. My newer laptop the satellite c55t did not install the cumulative update I thought it had before I went to bed guess it was sleep deprivation. On the plus side it's not getting stuck on the load screen
and it installed the other updates. I've shutdown restarted multiple times and every time I open windows update it keeps saying restart required for the cumulative update. It did the same thing on my L455 which was completely reset with fresh install of windows,
it said restart required, but under update history it said the cumulative update was installed. On my c55t it's not even showing as installed and I've disabled all 3rd party apps and windows firewall it still will not install this update.
Finale and final solution: My Satellite c55t finally installed the cumulative update after hitting the restart now button in the windows update app, but would not install it by restarting from the start menu button go figure. So what have we learned
here. Go to services or system config disable third party apps before this update installs and restarts your pc. (too late)
So in summary: Both laptops got stuck on black load screen after updates install and restart. My L455 got reset because system restore points didn’t work and installed everything fine with the one little quirk where windows update said I still needed
to restart now cumulative update was pending restart, but update history said it had been installed this corrected itself once I hit the restart now button. My c55t got set back to restore point and then disabled and stopped all third party apps. Then windows
update downloaded and installed all updates after restart except the cumulative. Restarted laptop and shutdown completely multiple times, all updates were installed with the exception of cumulative which still said pending restart, restart now. It finally
installed once I hit the restart now button in the windows update app. I should also note that 3rd party apps have never ever been an issue ever for me as far as updates go so what gives. ASC and IOBIT are 2 of the main culprits here as well as malwarebytes.
