Some devices may hang or freeze when using certain apps, such as “Hey Cortana” or Chrome, after installing the Windows 10 April 2018 Update

Microsoft is aware that some devices running the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) may hang or freeze when using certain apps, such as “Hey Cortana” or Chrome.

If your device freezes when using an app, try one of the following steps to recover Windows without needing to restart:

  1. Try a Windows key sequence to wake the screen.  If you have a keyboard connected, simultaneously press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. If you’re on a tablet, simultaneously press both the volume-up and volume-down buttons, three times within 2 seconds.  If Windows is responsive, a short beep will sound and the screen will blink or dim while Windows attempts to refresh the screen.
  2. If you’re using a laptop, close and open the laptop lid.

Microsoft is working on a solution with the goal of including it in the next regular monthly update, currently targeted for a release date of May 8, 2018.

Update (5/8/18):  A solution was included in the May 8th, 2018 cumulative update (KB4103721).  Windows Update will automatically download and install the solution.  To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.  If your system still experiences performance problems after installing the latest updates, you may be experiencing a different issue.  Please describe your issue in another thread or by using the Feedback Hub.

What is the make and model of your laptop ? However get your laptop checked by technician. There could be problem with the fan or cooling and if SSD like Lenovo yoga 3 pro 1370 then HEAT SINC problem. Open up and clean up the frozen Sinc, renew it and it will work fine. I did that yesterday and all is running normal, no more freezing. Do let me know after it has been done.

    p.s.

No problem at all yesterday, that was. Some with a Java app (executable .jar), Chrome and preview thumbnails in the GIMP today. Otherwise, not too bad. So, while uninstalling recent updates did help, it's not a complete solution.

Seriously that information is old, it is proven it doesn't fix this issue, so why keep posting it!!

BTW, the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B has nothing to do with the CPU maxing out at 100% for minutes, it is for boot up or black screens and not when something is causing the device drive to restart.

Seriously where do some of you get your experience from, by just copying and pasting what others posted elsewhere, with no solution in sight you failed to read what people are saying...

I wish there way to vote you down, for supplying wrong information.

I'm not quite sure what the latest update you mention is supposed to have resolved, but from what I read in these pages and from my own experience, PCs are still failing. The amount of downtime suffered by us all is astonishing. Does anyone have any insights into what and when a full update to rectify this woeful problem will be available?

    Exasperated Microsoft User

    Yes, equally exasperated.

And no, no idea of any fix on the horizon nor any insight.

Seems MS stuffed up worse than usual this time.
