Some devices may hang or freeze when using certain apps, such as “Hey Cortana” or Chrome, after installing the Windows 10 April 2018 Update

Microsoft is aware that some devices running the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) may hang or freeze when using certain apps, such as “Hey Cortana” or Chrome.

If your device freezes when using an app, try one of the following steps to recover Windows without needing to restart:

  1. Try a Windows key sequence to wake the screen.  If you have a keyboard connected, simultaneously press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. If you’re on a tablet, simultaneously press both the volume-up and volume-down buttons, three times within 2 seconds.  If Windows is responsive, a short beep will sound and the screen will blink or dim while Windows attempts to refresh the screen.
  2. If you’re using a laptop, close and open the laptop lid.

Microsoft is working on a solution with the goal of including it in the next regular monthly update, currently targeted for a release date of May 8, 2018.

Update (5/8/18):  A solution was included in the May 8th, 2018 cumulative update (KB4103721).  Windows Update will automatically download and install the solution.  To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.  If your system still experiences performance problems after installing the latest updates, you may be experiencing a different issue.  Please describe your issue in another thread or by using the Feedback Hub.

I recently gave up on a brand new Dell windows laptop - it continually froze and hung up - Dell worked on it for 6 months -  used up about 30 hours of my time.  They couldn't fix it and wouldn't stand behind it even though I could prove it started happening first time I logged in - I just didn't realize what was happening for the first few months.  It kept throwing WHEA-logger errors - more than 16,000 in the first two days after reinstall. Costco graciously let me trade it in for an HP - no where near the quality, but at least it works.  Interestingly enough, I tried the store model of the Dell demo at a later date and it did the same thing - wonder how many other poor suckers are out there with that model of Dell who haven't realized the freezes aren't just because it is a slow computer!

I'm experiencing the exact same thing, but with 1709 build... Everthing freezes and the Win+Ctrl+Alt+B also solves for a moment, but then it freezes again...

Since it is not version 1803, I cannot install the "May 8th, 2018 cumulative update (KB4103721)" that allegedly solves this.

Should I update to 1803, and then install the KB4103721?

Thank you to all who replied but the Update did not work. When I go to Settings-Apps-Default Apps and choose the link to "Set defaults by app" at the bottom, the page just closes (disappears). It acts like it is trying to load the page but just ends up closing. Thank you again.

I upgraded to 1803 and have only found one issue (so far) that needs addressing. When I go to Settings-Apps-Default Apps and choose the link to "Set defaults by app" at the bottom, the page just closes (disappears). It acts like it is trying to load the page but just ends up closing. I have tried running SFC and DISM and even repairing/resetting Edge all to no avail.

Microsoft needs to stop trying to make Dream Apps and get back to reality

.. I would add RELIABILITY ! A product this "old" should be rock solid. It isn't. Most of the updates are "early adopter" junk I don't want. The cost, decreased reliability in a basic computer, long cumbersome updates.

Here's a business model MS should look at: I would PAY to have a system they didn't monkey with!
