Microsoft is aware that some devices running the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) may hang or freeze when using certain apps, such as “Hey Cortana” or Chrome. If your device freezes when using an app, try one of the following steps to recover Windows without needing to restart: Try a Windows key sequence to wake the screen. If you have a keyboard connected, simultaneously press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B . If you’re on a tablet, simultaneously press both the volume-up and volume-down buttons, three times within 2 seconds. If Windows is responsive, a short beep will sound and the screen will blink or dim while Windows attempts to refresh the screen. If you’re using a laptop, close and open the laptop lid. Microsoft is working on a solution with the goal of including it in the next regular monthly update, currently targeted for a release date of May 8, 2018. Update (5/8/18): A solution was included in the May 8th, 2018 cumulative update (KB4103721). Windows Update will automatically download and install the solution. To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update , and select Check for updates . If your system still experiences performance problems after installing the latest updates, you may be experiencing a different issue. My Installed Updates screen informs me that the latest (and only) "Update for Microsoft Windows" corresponds to KB4100403. Reading this thread, it's apparent there are more up-to-date versions since my version was released, but when I check for updates, I'm told my system is up-to-date. Since I'm also now experiencing some ill effects of the latest updates (screen goes black and system is unresponsive to keypresses and mouse clicks), I'm wondering if anyone can tell me why the system finds no updates. If you go to settings, about and check the version it should end with .81, if it does then you're fully up to date.

I didn't have too many BSOD's, but I do recall a major problem with the first release of win 10. Something to do with Start Menu & Cortana not working, which proved quite a headache for months. Anyway.. Back to the subject at hand: I have noticed often that problems worsen as the day progresses. Here's an example of another missing text and iconsissue. I've noticed it before in the download Save as dialogue, especially in the field where the name of the file should display. At the same time, I discover that the GIMP text fields are also now not working where they were earlier in the day. Additionally, my desktop icons looked ok until mouse over. Then the text for some of them disappeared, leaving the same black mess as shown previously. My thinking now is that it's not the wrong font, but rather the drop shadow for the text that is normally there. This time, a Restart did restore full functionality - for the time being, at least. As a matter of fact, as soon as I hit Restart and before before restart began my desktop icons were restored.
