Can't preview jpg files in the preview pane -- Windows 10 Fall Update (1709)

I have this issue and it started with the Windows 10 Fall update (1709).  jpg files are not displayed in the preview pane but other files are displayed (pdf, docx, xlxs, etc.).  I've tried setting the default jpg program to several different programs to no avail.  Prior to the 1709 update, jpg files were displayed in the File Explorer preview pane.  It seems to be an issue with the 1709 update.

    Donrt understand why Microsoft like to change things!

    However, since I didn't have the slighest idea on which options to choose, I just left all the same boxes ticked (including the 'show thumbnails instead of icons"

    Since I didn't make any changes, the page wouldn't allow me to save or apply my changes.  So I unticked one of the boxes and ticked it again.  I could then apply my changes

    I went to my control panel.

    then I opened "system" and chose "advanced system settings" on the left hand side

    I then clicked on the "advanced" tab and then under "performance" I clicked on "settings"

    The video I watched said to make sure that the "show thumbnails instead of icons" block was ticked.

    That didn't help me since my little block was already ticked.  (I was also a little ticked off at that stage...)

    I then saw that there were four options starting with  "Let windows choose....."  and then "custom".

    Mine was ticked as "let windows choose".  I thought I didn't trust Windows anymore and elected to take all its choices away.

    So I changed the option to "Custom".

    However, since I didn't have the slighest idea on which options to choose, I just left all the same boxes ticked (including the 'show thumbnails instead of icons"

    I'm not an expert at all but I can tell you what worked for me.  I tried all the other advice offered on this thread.

    Finally I followed an obscure youtube link and managed to adapt the advice there for me.

    Voila!  My preview was back.

    I don't know if this is a real fix.

    For all I know, some extra stellar space beams from URANUS hit my PC at just the correct frequency  to fix the problem at exactly the precise second that I opened my windows explorer again.

    With Windows,   anything is possible.

    But whatever.  It's fixed.

    Good luck and may Uranus hit your PC too.

    I have never had OneDrive set to "Save space and download files as I need them" and I still have the problem of thumbnails for jpg files not visible. Also, it doesn't matter if the jpg is lower or upper case. Still no thumbnails. visible.

    Well Uranus didn't hit my PC. Still not showing PNG files :/

    If copying and moving a .jpg gets your preview back that sounds like Win10 may need reminding what creates the preview.

    I would try changing the default program to open a .jpg to be the Microsoft Photos app.

    Once that has locked in and double-clicking a jpg file opens it in Photos; try changing the default back to Photoshop or whatever you normally use for editing. It may take a while for this to lock in fully if you have that many stored jpg files on your drive.

    That change of program ownership may be sufficient to change the attributes stored within the registry to bring back the preview.
