Fall Creator update fails to install at 81%

All my windows updates crashes while installing. I have windows 10 version 1607 and was trying to update to the fall creators update. Like previous upgrades, this version crashes the computer while updating and reverts back to the previous version.

Unlike previous crashes, this one made it all the way to 81%.

I have tried all prior options to try to correct this issue with no resolution :(

I was having a similar problem, and after multiple attempts (over 7 times) trying different solutions like disabling virus protection, disabling startup programs, running update database corruption repair, etc. My computer never got past 81% before freezing and not updating.

I stumbled across a forum talking about problems with  Anatel  PCI-E Wlan cards (wi-fi) and old drivers that would hang up their computers and after removing the card (not just disabling) their machines would update and run fine. Since I was running my machine through an Ethernet connection, connected to an access point, I could remove the Anatel card in my computer and still have an internet connection. I tried it, and my computer a Gateway FX6860 updated to Windows 10 Fall Creators version without any problems. 

Check to see if you have an Anatel wifi card and remove it and replace it with something newer or an Ethernet or usb connection to the internet and try the update. this worked for me.

    Gateway computer - i5-2310 DX 4860

    Pulled out the wifi network card.  (Connected via ethernet.)

    The update to 1709 went through perfectly.  Thank you.

    You are an absolute genius

    Yes -> Anatel wifi card has no drivers post Win8.1.  Removed card and update worked fine.

    Thanks very much for sharing.

    BTW - Microsoft support attempted to use Show/Hide updates -> didn't work; also Registry settings didn't work.

    I also have an old Packard Bell machine: in my case an imedia S3810 desktop

    According to their site, this machine is not officially supported for this upgrade (there is a very small list of supported machines)

    It appears the machine is considred obsolete and unable to upgrade

    This would be fine, if the upgrade was optional

    However, Microsoft insists on forcing the upgrade, so I am locked into a cycle of upgrade attempts which take many hours each time and are guaranteed to fail.  My machine is now entirely unusable.

    I need a mechanism for getting out of this mess and continuing to use my PC

    I don't need any of the 'features' added in Windows Fall Creator Update

    I can't afford (and don't want) to junk the machine and go buy another one

    This is Microsoft's responsibility:

    • Future software versions are outside the control of hardware manufacturers, so they cannot be held responsible for non-compatibility
    • It is Microsoft that has decided a) to create the upgrade, b) to force the upgrade without the option to retain earlier version

    As such, Microsoft has a clear responsibility

    EITHER to provide patches for machines that were compatible but aren't any longer

    OR to provide an alternative path that allows the machine to avoid the upgrade and continue on a previous version

    OR to purchase replacement machines for affected users

    Given that it is apparently not possible to install this upgrade, are you aware of any patches for older Packard Bell machines, or of any options to avoid the upgrade?
