Fall Creator update fails to install at 81%

All my windows updates crashes while installing. I have windows 10 version 1607 and was trying to update to the fall creators update. Like previous upgrades, this version crashes the computer while updating and reverts back to the previous version.

Unlike previous crashes, this one made it all the way to 81%.

I have tried all prior options to try to correct this issue with no resolution :(

I was having a similar problem, and after multiple attempts (over 7 times) trying different solutions like disabling virus protection, disabling startup programs, running update database corruption repair, etc. My computer never got past 81% before freezing and not updating.

I stumbled across a forum talking about problems with  Anatel  PCI-E Wlan cards (wi-fi) and old drivers that would hang up their computers and after removing the card (not just disabling) their machines would update and run fine. Since I was running my machine through an Ethernet connection, connected to an access point, I could remove the Anatel card in my computer and still have an internet connection. I tried it, and my computer a Gateway FX6860 updated to Windows 10 Fall Creators version without any problems. 

Check to see if you have an Anatel wifi card and remove it and replace it with something newer or an Ethernet or usb connection to the internet and try the update. this worked for me.

    I have just got Microsoft support to make some Registry changes which apparently fix the problem

    Basically, as simple as setting Updates to "Do not update" or "Tell me about updates and let me choose"

    (or words to that effect)

    It you go to Microsoft Support site, select chat, and 'speak to a live agent' they are apparently doing this for people 24/7

    They assured me it will be fine now ... will have to wait and see

    Misery loves company.

    I am glad I am not the only one with this problem.

    But yes, I wish the stupid windows updater will stop trying to get me to update to a version which I can't install. 

    P.S. I don't even think that my PC is that old. I purchased it 2013, so it is only 5 years old.

    Hi

    I tried using the Media Crearion Tool which seemed to work without me having to use a DVD or USB stick.

    The install process reached a certain point after my PC had restarted a few times where all I could see was a completely black screen, no cursor, progress indicator or error message.  After about two hours I power cycled the computer (this happened before and I left the computer overnight), and when it came back on I saw the blue update screen saying installing updates at 75%, it reached 81% and the update screen froze again as previously.

    After an hour or so with no movement, I power cycled, and the computer restarted telling me it was attempting to reinstall my previos version of Windows.  When it reached the desktop I got the following message:

    Yer, same problem we all encounter. 

    No solution by Microsoft in over 1 year.

    i fell you bro. im having the same problem since mid year and until now, there is no apparent crystal clear solution. Im running ASUS GL502VT 16gb ram 1607 build. tired of endless loop and download. 

    Yup, it has been a long painful road. Doing a clean install was especially painful since I had to get rid of all my programs, files and documents :( And despite all that, the update still did not work :(
