I cannot restore any system image which was created in Windows 10 v1709 using Backup and Restore. I receive the following error:

“The system image restore failed.

Error details: A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information.

(0x80042302)”

This is a fresh Windows 10 v1709 installation. The repair disk was created using Backup and Restore. The image resides on an external USB hard drive which contains other images. I can restore any Windows 10 v1703 image using the repair disk. I cannot restore any Windows 10 v1709 image using the repair disk.

As a first test, I installed Windows 10 v1709 on a new HP EliteBook 840 G4 laptop (before installation I wiped its hard drive). I also used a different external USB hard drive to back up the image successfully. I checked Event Viewer and found no errors or warnings relating to Windows Backup. After a successful backup, I wiped that laptop using the “clean” command and tried to restore the same image I created earlier. It failed with the VSS error referenced above.

As a second test, I installed Windows 10 v1703 on the same HP EliteBook 840 G4 laptop (before installation I wiped its hard drive). I used the same external USB hard drive to back up the image successfully. I checked Event Viewer and found no errors or warnings relating to Windows Backup. After a successful backup, I wiped that laptop using the “clean” command and tried to restore the same image I created earlier. The restore was successful.

Unsuccessfully, I tried to restore an image using repair disks I created in Windows 10 v1703, v1607 and v1511.

I am aware System Image Backup (SIB) Solution is deprecated (not removed) in v1709. I searched online for other users with the same issue and came across the following post on TechNet forum.

The culprit appears to be v1709. Something changed to prevent a successful restore.

    I agree but MS is not going to fix SIB since it is considered to be obsolete.

    I just used EASEUS BACKUP HOME free version to restore my computer DISK/PARTITION back to the way it was when I created it on Feb. 2, 2018. It restored my Windows Drive as good as SIB. It was a little confusing and took a little longer but the results were very good. I checked all my old paid legacy programs and they all work as good as before and my Anti-Virus (which was the reason I restored the C:\ Drive) works as good as new. After this, I am going to delete all System Image Backup on my computer since I found out that the above mentioned software works as well at SIB. I also have Acronis as a backup or If I need to install my Image to a different drive. 

    I made a Easeus Windows PE Flash drive which I have connected in a hub all the time. When I boot up, Windows gives me a choice (within 5 seconds) to continue to default Windows or EASEUS Backup.  This program is probably best used for home computers and not businesses, in my opinion. Easeus, I believe, has a business version.

    I agree. The responses here are painful to read. In my case there is NO DAMAGE TO SYSTEM FILES OR INTERRUPTION WHILE RESTORING. NOR ARE THERE THIRD PARTY APPLICATIONS THAT CAN INTERFERE. It's an image of an OOTB install of 1703 that had been updated to 1709. Period. 

    Yes, MS has deprecated the utility. Here's the problem: it works to back up, it fails when you go to restore. Considering that these are pretty critical operations, it should either be fixed or completely removed in 1709. There's no gray area here.

    The MS responses are tone deaf.

    Can you escalate this bug to a "3 bananas monkey" ?

    This bug is easy to recreate, why are we getting back all these stupid questions from Microsoft.

    Every UEFI machine running windows 10 1709 has this bug.

    The restore image fails every time when it needs to recreate and format the partitions on the disk of any machine running in UEFI mode.
