Issues Updating from 1703 to 1709

            That method of installation was tried on my machine together with many others and also with alterations to my OS customisation etc and nothing worked.  As said before Microsoft Help Desk failed to achieve the update although they tried 5 times, I lost count of the number of attempts I have made over the last 2 months.

I would like to share my personal solution to all who reading this. I can't guarantee that it fits to your situation. Crossing fingers.

1. Optional: Full Backup
2. Use the Media Creation Tool and install 1709 setup on USB Flash Drive
3. Run setup.exe while in Windows
4. On "Get important updates" select "Not right now"
5. Proceed as described
6. Ready to install
   • Yes: Install Windows 10 (Pro)
   • Yes: Keep personal files and apps
   • Don't click on "Change what to keep"
7. While update the PC starts min. 3 times + later for some pending updates, two times in my case
8. Start, Run (Win + R): winver shows that I successfully installed 1709

         As reported before, everything I did to reduce the possible source of the problem failed same as always at 45% first boot.

         I have opened a new partition on the HDD and installed 1709 onto that with nil problems using the latest 1709 .iso on DVD from startup for that purpose.  For some reason my SSD, located in what was the optical drive bay, continued to be recognised as USB upon boot so I was unable to use a usb memory card for that purpose ( yes, I had to remove the SSD to allow me to remount the DVD player and reboot twice to get the fact recognised)

         I would have preferred to have loaded the 1709 version to the SSD but when I put the SSD into the laptop HDD slot I had startup problem as the drive was not recognised.   Rather than solve another problem I took the easy way because it will not take long to clone the 1709 onto my SSD where it will be much, much, faster for me to swap versions during rebuilding the 1709 OS to my needs and the existing for my work needs.   I suppose that using a virtual version would be easier and even faster but I have not managed to find the time yet to play with virtualisation of Windows, I know I should but all my spare time and a lot of my work time has gone into getting 1709 to load along with a VLAN problem at my local BT exchange (UK) causing frequent  internet disconnections which they have finally located but cannot fix for the next 3 weeks.

         I have a list of drivers for the un-updatable 1703, I will do a comparison check for differences between newly installed 1709 plus when I finish reloading all my software to see if anything stands out regarding size version and date etc.  If anything obvious appears I will let you know.

Thank you for the update. Please let us know if you're able to upgrade to version 1709 after removing all unusual shortcuts, partitions, and software. If it is still the same, kindly provide us the steps you're performing to upgrade or update to 1709. Also, kindly tell us if you're performing a repair upgrade or a clean install.

            Latest 1709 attempt failed, Updates system reset and all unusual shortcuts and partitions disconnected and software deleted just in case it was involved in the problem.  I used usb memory card with full Windows 1709 run as upgrade.

            I will make space for new partition and load as dual boot to see if that will install.
