Windows 10 home, new computer with CPU Intel 8700K working well, version 1709 installed.

I noticed that windows update gives error 0x80070bc2 when trying to install 2017-11 Cumulative update for Windows Version 1709 for amd64-based systems KB4048955 (and before KB4043961) ... getting a sort of a loop as it requires a restart to finish installing but at any restart gives the same message and does not install.

Tried various things such as sfc scan, dism, troubleshooting windows update, manual install etc.  Nothing works.  Other updates such as KB4048951 and KB4051613 installed correctly in the last few days.  Can someone help?

This seems to have worked for me:

  • Right-click on Windows key and select Command Prompt (Admin).
  • Type the following commands in Command Prompt window. To execute them, press Enter after each one.

SC config wuauserv start= auto

SC config bits start= auto

SC config cryptsvc start= auto

SC config trustedinstaller start= auto

  • Finally, restart your PC and try to install the update that was previously returning the 0x80070bc2 error.

    After a lot of trying, and thinking, I realized that there was a pattern on the problem...I never got to see the Updating windows + 20%...40%...100% etc animation. So, on my mind the problem was not the update, it was sth related to restarting the machine, maybe some processes were blocked, so I did these:

    Defina os serviços associados ao Windows Update como início automático:

    1. Pressione as teclas Windows+Q e digite CMD;

    2. Clique com o botão direito do Mouse sobre CMD e selecione Executar como Administrador;

    3. Cole os comandos abaixo um a um, e para processá-lo, pressione Enter:

    SC config wuauserv start= auto [Enter]

    SC config bits start= auto [Enter]

    SC config cryptsvc start= auto [Enter]

    SC config trustedinstaller start= auto [Enter]

    4. Reinicie o sistema.

    In English, open CMD as administrator, an type one by one:

    SC config wuauserv start= auto [Press Enter]

    SC config bits start= auto [Press Enter]

    SC config cryptsvc start= auto [Press Enter]

    SC config trustedinstaller start= auto [Press Enter]

    Then I rebooted and tried Windows Update and finally it downloaded (as always) but when Installing + restarting, windows update animation was back, before restarting the OS, and immediately after turning on.

    Now, my problem was not only limited to the KB versions mentioned here, I could not even install a normal flash update, all of them showed as installed on Programs and Features BUT WITH NO DATE, and windows version didn't upgrade ether in the About settings Windows.

    So give these a try, as I said, my problem was not updates (because it happened with all of them), it was related to the system not restarting properly (or with some processes missing), therefore updates installation never went well.

    Hope this helps!

    Big thanks, with your commands i resolved problem.

    I have gave up on this issue, there is NO fix. Microsoft messed up big time on this update. They can't even fix it. I have been working on this problem for months with no results. I used the Windows 10 restore and I lost most every thing on my computer even the ability to restore to my Factory setting and all restore media. The Windows 10 restore removed most every application that was installed on my computer at the time I bought it. Now I have a striped down computer. I do a lot of Graphic Designs, now I have no ideal how to get my Recovery Media back, since Acer no longer offers my Recover Media, it is my true feelings that Microsoft is the blame for this and I can see no answer but to buy a new media/system. I just feel Microsoft should pay me for my lost. Below are all the things I lost with Windows 10 restore. I have tried all the Recommended Fix's on this Subject and None work. I have also lost my Home Network and My Home Groups, because of this  error 0x80070bc2 when trying to install 2017-11 Cumulative update for Windows Version 1709 for amd64-based systems KB4048955 (and before KB4043961) This update can not be installed. Now that my computer is no longer any good for my needs, I have no choice but to Try to find the Recovery Media I need to get back to Windows 7. This is what happens when we the Consumer lets Microsoft take over our Computers, they make mistakes and we have to pay for them. I am sorry I sound so negative, but I just am wore out trying to fix something that can't be Fixed. I am now leaving this Thread, it makes no sense to keep talking about something when there is no answer.
