Automated Windows 10 updates deleted all my documents and files

The actual aforementioned site which explains how to permanently disable automatic updating in Windows 10 [unless you later decide to enable it], is titled:

• How to disable automatic updates using Group Policy
• How to disable automatic updates using Registry

I used the first option (using Group Policy editing) and if I can trust my Professional Windows 10 setup announcement, the automatic update is now halted-- yet I have to cross my fingers that MS disease does not appear again to devour my data again!!--

I did not dare to go with the second option to touch the Registry, in case something unexpected happened and I'd lose my data again!

However, after the abovementioned operation Something weird happened: My Google Chrome does not work anymore (Click on it and it only leads to thumbnails-- uninstalling and reinstalling did not work!)-- It is as if there was a hidden link between the auto-updates and the browser!! (Weird? Or another MS bug??). although in the Task Bar you can search for Google Chrome.exe which opens up the browser but we are warned that it may contain some malware!)-- As I result, I am now using another browser (e) despite my reluctance.

Solve anything in MS Windows platform and you'll end up with the side-effects of the cure!

Thanks for posting this.  When I did the search for gpedit.msc   it opens a Microsoft Edge webpage with the following link.  Not sure if this is correct? 

In case you are getting “MMC could not create the snap-in” error message while starting gpedit.msc,...

1. Go to C:\Windows\Temp\gpedit\ folder and make sure it exists.
2. Download the following zip file and unzip it to C:\Windows\Temp\gpedit. This should replace two files x86.bat and x64.bat.Download.

After year of my report about Windows 10 deleting all my files and application, and getting no proper reply from Microsoft on this MS Disease, I had to spend more money and replace my Windows 10 Home Edition with Professional Edition so that I can at least postpone the automatic update for a year, hopingthat after a year the creaters of the MS Disease could find a cure for this disasterous bug, But as I am uproaching to the deadline I keep gettng the same report about the spread of this disease with new victims. Panking, I found the following site (written on Feb 18th, 2019) which  shows you how one can DISABLE Windows 10 Updates  permanently (say until Microsoft can get rid of the bug!)-- I followed the instruction, crossing my finger it works:

Disabling updates

To permanently disable automatic updates on Windows 10, use these steps:

1.    Open Start.

2.    Search for gpedit.msc and select the top result to launch the experience.

3.    Navigate to the following path:

Computer Configuration àAdministrative Templates

àWindows Components àWindows Update

4.    Double-click the Configure Automatic Updates policy on the right side.

5. Check the Disabled option to turn off the policy, then Apply and OK.

I ended up having to restore my computer from my Carbonite backup.  Some of which I had to reinstall some programs.  I was on the phone with Carbonite help desk and had them help me.  That still didn't solve the issue.  So I rebooted my computer 3 or 4 times and lo and behold finally it came up the way it was suppose to before applying the update.  GO FIGURE!!!!!!

I just got home from work thinking i'm going to watch a movie, but hey noo, 'cause Windows update wiped my laptop off all the programs and everything i had in it. How on earth this is supposed to be a normal thing? At least give the opportunity to the user to chose if he wants or not to update. I had updates deactivated and even that way i got this **** update! Thank you so much Microsft, you just made my evening better( ironic mode off). Wonder if it's possible to sue them, or something, they deserve it!!
