Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

    Same here. My mum's notebook was perfectly fine. Then update 1803 came and now it is totally ruined. It is stuck in the choose a keyboard loop. It won't recover, won't reset, won't reapir, only keeps restarting. It is really frustrating. I'm going crazy trying to fix it, but nothing works!

    I have another notebook waiting to install update number 1803 and I'm already freaking out, I'm going to end up with two ruined notebooks.

    I recommend download the iso and then mount because the other option usually fails.

    Then follow the steps to grab the other tool to mount the iso in the pendrive that creates a bootable usb, plug in the broken windows and do the following:

    After you are in the desktop (of the broken Windows) press Alt-Ctrl-Supr and choose Task Manager

    File run new task, browse find the setup.exe in the usb and check the Create this task with administrative privileges.

    This is how I ran the setup. Also there you can open the File Explorer portable with administrative tools I mentioned earlier to make a a backup.

    And the same here.

    Continue - Leads to reboot and the same screen after keyboard selection.

    Choose operating system - leads to the rollback and two different (or the same) Windows 10 installs.

    Advanced options - leads to this that page, with options that always tell you that you can't do any of them.

    I'm also having this problem after my laptop restarted after the most recent update. Seriously hoping that my files are not permenantly lost. Microsoft better come up with a fix

    After making a backup of the files, I mounted the latest iso and installed keeping apps and finally it installed fine and worked, even the account has been recovered. The file is the MediaCreationTool1803.exe then mount in a usb with Windows7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool-Installer-en-US, x64 version.

    Well finally solved, good luck everyone.
