Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

    I fixed the VP's Lenovo that was stuck like this in the 1803 update. I used the media creator tool to make a bootable USB/DVD with the 1803 update, chose the option to boot to a different OS on the recovery options screen, picked one of the other choices besides the rollback and once it's got into windows with the black desktop (and pretty much nothing working) then you do CTRL+ALT+DEL open task mgr. Click file, "run a new task" select with administrative privileges and browse to the setup.exe on the bootable USB/DVD you created. Run the upgrade and keep your files and apps. I just finished the last reboot (it took almost 2 hours to load) and everything is back to normal (Microsoft normal). I hope this helps some of you, of course if you only have one PC you will need to get a friend to help create the 1803 install USB/DVD drive.

    Great. Appears im not the only one with this Keyboard prompt after this crappy update.

    The trouble is after being forced to attempt rollback I can no longer log in via fingerprint and being asked to log in with password. A password that I KNOW IS CORRECT and yet im being told its not.

    Well done Microsoft. Thanks for ruining my laptop which I need DAILY for my job !!!!

    I've had 2 clients with the same issue as you all in the past 2 days.  The first one, nothing at all worked, had to reset it and loose all installed programs but saved their data.  The next on reset fails right away and when I can get it to boot in the desktop backgroundless screen and run reset from the command prompt, it stalls at 1%.  Ugh, this client isn't going to be happy with that diagnosis.
