Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

    Just press "change defaults" after the keyboard language selection, and change to boot to your windows and not to windows rollback. Then select continue to windows

    Actually with that tip (that I discover before he posted it) you enter into "windows safe mode", it's a mode that charge the most basic drivers to give you access to do kinda of something (for that reason you see a black screen instead of your wallpaper). I was able to copy my files from my laptop to an external hardrive from the funtion "Run" (if you type win+r it appears in a lower corner and you can click browse to see and search your files because in this mode explorer.exe or the file explorer does not exist or doesn't run) just by clicking the browse button and copy folder by folder to the drive. Be pacient, it takes a while and it doesn't show you any visual feedback, just "the sand clock" that means thats is making a task and if you click many times it will say "the program is not responding" for the same reason. When it finish the only thing you will notice is the new folder in your external device.

    Take in mind that with this method you can only copy folders because how is from the funtion "Run", it is seafching for .exe archives and not regular ones so if you have some archive in particular that you want to extract, you need to copy the entire folder that contains it.

    The only problem that I have doing this is when it hits a big archive (in my case a game image that size 60GB) it says because of it size it cannot be copied (I guess it's because of the load of just the basic drivers) so that archives will be forever gone or at least for now.

    Hope I help you (specially the thesis guy) and you can now understand a little bit more of what's happening.

    And yeah, for the record, stupid untested update haha :(

    I think mine got a little different. Not in "windows safe mode". Actually, the computer is completely off and sometimes "Lenovo" flashes on the screen.

    How do I get in this "windows safe mode"?

    Hi all,

    Same issue here. Client did an update, since then laptop in bootloop. I can get to the login screen by selecting the 'last' Windows 10 as default, but when the laptops comes to the Windows 10 login screen the usernames and the login box is missing. I'm fairly certain the update corrupted Windows 10.

    HDD test was ok. Chkdsk was ok. I'm not refreshing Windows; keeping personal files, losing apps and settings.
