Disabling cortana helped for a wee bit but the problem came back again and with a vengeance. The permanent solution is to re-install windows, haven't faced this problem since.
Windows 10 apps won't open fully on first try - have to close and reopen for them to work

Windows Apps such as the Windows Store, Calculator app, Skype app, and Mail app usually do not open fully on the first try. The app window will show up, but the functions are not available. I will only see the logo of the app in the center of the solid theme color.
However, if I close the window and reopen the app, it will work fine.
Does anyone know how to fix this so that an app will open normally the first time?
(I have attached a picture of the Calculator app to demonstrate the problem.)

2018-07-25T13:38:16+00:00 I found a solution elsewhere that may apply for you. You just do a normal shutdown (not a restart) then wait a few seconds and turn it back on. It triggers some lingering update.

2018-07-25T13:19:42+00:00 I had the exact same problem with the store apps initially, now the office apps appear to be affected. None of these solutions have worked for me. Has anyone come up with a definitive solution to this issue? I'm using a Dell XPS desktop with Windows 10 version 1803 (OS Build 17134.165). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2018-07-16T19:12:37+00:00 I did ctrl+alt+delete and closed cortana, this issue has now gone away (at least for now). Cortana just reopens immediately it seems but at least a clue, probably related to cortana.

Latest update screwed whatever the bizarre workaround was doing and if course there's no actual help MS but endlessly regurgitating this ~run this useless scanner~ BS. I'm not your goddamn beta tester. Getting really tired of this crap.
