New Win7 install will not do windows update ***FINALLY FIXED***

No suggestions?

It’s an older machine and just looking at the original receipt, I brought the components to put it together in 2005 and so that is when WinXP was originally installed.

I brought Win 7 about 1.5 years ago when MS stopped supporting WinXP,  so recently since it was starting to get long in the tooth.  I wiped it a couple of days ago and started fresh with a second install of Win7 32-bit.

Yes, I always let the OS automatically activate immediately after the install.  When I just look at the “View basic information about your computer” under “Control Panel Home”, it says “Window is activated” with the product ID underneath.

I brought the OEM installation media 1.5 years ago when I needed Win7.  This is the same software I originally installed Win7 in this same computer and it has worked fine for all this time.

I have tried a number of times these last few days to re-install Win7 (2-3 times) because the Windows update did not work.  Originally, I thought perhaps it was Nortons, so the most recent time I install Win7, I try the windows update immediately after installing the OS i.e. before I install any other software like Nortons.  It made no difference.  FWIW, Windows firewall was on all the time.

Right now I have “Norton’s Internet Security” installed.

I thought well he has the same problem so I tried the “Validation” suggestion by Cornell.  That software ran and installed but reported that it could not validate my computer.....  My question is how can an OS that is obviously validated and activated with the encryption key supplied with the disc but now cannot be validated over the net?  Seems like MS is putting another validation step in the process and driving us crazy trying to do windows update when we don’t realize that “activation” is not good enough and there is another hidden “Validation” at play and that does not work.

Sorry if I sound frustrated, but I have recently spent 2 weeks trying to get two new $2,000 Surface Pro 4 working that were both corrupted by Windows Update when brand new (again with NO software installed…) and MS could not fix (had to send them back).  Now this business rears its ugly head on my other PC – it’s a bit much….  It’s enough to drive a guy like me who started in 1982 with DOS 1.0 and a loyal PC supporter to an Apple…

It’s an old system I build 8 years ago...Recently updated [sic] from WinXP to Win7 SP1

1. When (approx. date) did you install WinXP?
2. When (exact date) did you "wipe it and start over with a clean" install of Win7 32-bit?
3. Have you Activate (Authenticated; Validated) the clean install of Win7 yet?
4. Where did you obtain the OEM installation media you used to do the clean install of Win7?
5. How long has the computer been connected to the internet without an anti-virus application installed?

The computer still appears to wake up by itself and when I look at Norton's I see under "activity" "Connected to a restricted network."... [Op. cit.]

6. What Norton application is or was installed?

Yes, I wiped it and started over with a clean OS install - mistake....
