New Win7 install will not do windows update ***FINALLY FIXED***

This is starting to look like a perpetual Q&A… :-) 

If you want me to help I can, but I am going to need more rationale than just “to make sure it’s “running like a top” now!”

Is Microsoft Security Essentials installed now or...?

Are KB3138612, KB3123862, KB3035583, KB2952664 and/or KB2990214 offered when you run a manual check for updates?

Updates with strike through are not in "Installed Updates"

...my computer did tell me after the updates were completed that two updates “8024200D” and “800700E” failed to update when it was done, also when I looked at the update history, about 100 update was successful but about 50 was not thus far.  So a day now into the fix, I have found that of the 50 failures, now after two auto updates, only about 10 needs to be fixed...

The new install with ZERO chance of virus infection did not work – same endless downloads…  then I found this thread:

I followed the instructions in the original post o the letter and it worked perfectly.  In essence the author found that when you do a clean install of Win7.  MS automatically download the 7.6.7600.320 update which will BLOCK any successful updates.  The way to get around this is to first download two updates:

KB3083710

KB3102810

On to a separate hard drive i.e. not your system/boot disc.  If you are using an older version of Win7 OS install, you may need to first update Internet Explorer to IE11 as Windows does not allow you to download these updates with the older version of IE.

Now start with the Win7 install disk and first wipe your system/boot disc and re-install win7 but with the internet disconnected.  This last part is critical because it prevents MS from automatically uploading 7.6.7600.320.  If you don’t, you cannot get updates and unlike other updates, it cannot be uninstalled.

So you re-install win7 with the machine disconnected to the web and once it is up I click on the two updates listed above and install them one by one with reboots in between.  Once that is done, I connect to the web and first install my anti-virus which in my case is Norton’s Internet Security- Do all the updates to make sure you are 100% protected.  Now you can now go to update and unlike the previous problem, once you click on it, it will just take a few minutes to come back and actually tell you the number of updates and size it is.  For me, it was 151 updates and 492.6 MB.  Click OK to update and just wait – mine took about 2 hours.

Since this is a large download and install, it will take a few hours so make sure that your computer cannot power down by going to “control panel”, “System and security”, “Power options” “change when computer sleeps” and make “Put the computer to sleep” to NEVER.

When download and install is done, you will need to re-boot during which windows will configure the updates before it shuts down -This just takes a few minutes.  When it re-boots, it will do the rest of the update configuration which takes a few seconds.  It then re-boots.
