Like others (long lisst on this board....), I have no luck doing windows update after wiping my HD and re-loading Win7 from fresh. This is an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe MB with 3 Gb of memory with AMD64/4400+ Athlon 64 processor with OS on a Kingston 120 Gb SSDNow 300 SSD. Win7 is with SP1.
This will happens with no other software installed (i.e. anti-virus) and immediately after OS installation.. No problem at all with any hardware in “Device Manager”. The machine will communicate with the web just fine since I went directly to MS and download/ install IE11 which is working and e-mail is also working. I have tried:

So I am finally home and had some time to look at my updates. It appears that although the computer downloaded 200 odd updates and they show up in the “update history”, only 15 updates shows “successful” in “status”. The rest all showed “Failed”. I think all the "successful" ones were the ones that I hand loaded and not those that the system found.
What would cause this?
Still not home yet and working out of a hotel room but as mentioned earlier, the computer at home has been under the protection of Nortons Internet Security pretty much all the time except for the first 20 odd minutes when Win7 was first installed. Even then the Windows Firewall was on and I had no internet access. Any possibility that the computer was infected, impossible to say but highly unlikely. Not sure what Flash, Firefox, Chrome has to do with this but I did not install them.

I don't know (a) what, if any, anti-virus application is installed now, (b) if the computer's fully-patched at Windows Update yet, (c) if Adobe Flash Player v20.0.0.306 (or higher) is installed now, or (d) if the current version(s) of Firefox, Google Chrome and any other alternate browsers are installed now.

This is a simple case of M$ hating people manually searching for updates and still on win-7 = the end.
Just make sure these 4 services are set to Automatic and running.

Windows update

I thank you for your input but I would like to understand why you have this opinion - is it because you think the time to download the updates is unreasonable?
This of course was also my own opinion, but my current thought is it could perhaps be simply be due to the relatively early version of Win7 that I installed i.e. the early version will require many more updates.
Still, I am a bit puzzled that I did not get what I usually get when I ask for updates i.e. I usually get a scan and not too long afterwards a list of "important" and "optional" updates. The updates then install when I give it the go ahead. The current situation with the desktop PC is it scans and when loads them when I turn off and on the computer.
Would like to hear from others on these two questions.
