Many users of Windows Live Mail 2012 have received an email under this heading from the Outlook Team advising them of the changes that are taking place at Outlook.com as accounts are migrated to the same platform as that used by Office 365. Apart from advice to switch to using the built-in Mail apps on Windows 8.1 and 10, users are instructed to apply the patch KB3093594 . A few points to note: The change means that migrated accounts can no longer be synchronized using the old DeltaSync protocol. To synchronize these accounts, users can set up the account again to use IMAP . This will enable mail messages and folders to synchronize, but not the calendar and contacts. The patch enables support for Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) to be used instead of DeltaSync in Windows Live Mail 2012 on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 (see System requirements on the download page). Mail synchronization errors can often be cleared by removing the account, closing down the program and waiting a few minutes, then re-launching it and adding the account back again. We don't know what is going to happen with Windows Live Mail 2009 on XP and 2011 on Vista. It is clear that users will no longer be able to sign in with a migrated account to synchronize contacts and calendar, and they won't be able to synchronize mail messages and folders using DeltaSync. Whether the programs will continue to work in other respects (e.g. as a POP3, IMAP and NNTP client) remains to be seen. Apart from this question of synchronizing mail, calendars and contacts with a Microsoft Email account, there is no change now or in the foreseeable future for Windows Live Mail 2012. Mail accounts configured to use POP3 or IMAP will continue to work as before, the default calendar and contacts lists will still be available and the other functions - RSS feeds and newsgroups - continue as before. Because of the many problems that update KB3093594 caused for some users, it has been re-released, now at version 5.0 dated 23 December 2015. The revised KB includes this text under More information : Known issues about this update<ul> <li>Issue 1: After you install this update (that was released before December 17, 2015), you may find that the program crashes soon after start. Solution: Microsoft has identified the cause and has released a fix that addresses the issue for affected users on applicable platforms. KB3093594 supposedly updates WLM 2012 to be able to synchronize with the new Outlook Mail Preview which we are told uses EAS (Exchange ActiveSync). I checked the server name after doing this update and it shows Server URL as: http://mail.services.live.com/DeltaSync\_v2.0.0/sync.aspx which is the same Server URL shown before the update. If the KB3093594 truly moved WLM 2012 to EAS then the Server URL would have surely changed. Just does not make any sense.

If you switch to another program, then you no longer have your Contacts updated automatically through the Windows system, right? When I put a new contact in Windows Phone, any other program besides Live Mail will have to be entered separately? Which is NOT acceptable.

What does that mean? I am running WLMail 12 on Windows 8.1. Retrieving POP emails from cox, time warner, my own website, Gmail, Hotmail and outlook. Will the patch keep things running as they are now, or will settings no longer work? Will the patch retain my saved mail folders and emails, or wipe them out?

Mary, I also decided it was time for a change. I went with eM Client which is very similar to Thunderbird. I was sick and tired of worrying of losing everything with this so called update. Also to be honest, I was sick of being bullied into upgrading when I was perfectly happy with what I had. So goodbye to Outlook & Live (Microsoft) its been a ride alright.

If I install WLM2012 will it sync my emails with Outlook.com? Windows Live Mail 2012 is almost identical to v.2011 and works in exactly the same way. The only recent change is that Outlook.com accounts that have been upgraded to Outlook Mail will not synchronize unless update KB3093594 is applied. You don't need to apply the update until your account is upgraded.

Mary, I also decided it was time for a change. I went with eM Client which is very similar to Thunderbird. I was sick and tired of worrying of losing everything with this so called update. Windows Live Mail 2012 is almost identical to v.2011 and works in exactly the same way. The only recent change is that Outlook.com accounts that have been upgraded to Outlook Mail will not synchronize unless update KB3093594 is applied. You don't need to apply the update until your account is upgraded.
