Many users of Windows Live Mail 2012 have received an email under this heading from the Outlook Team advising them of the changes that are taking place at Outlook.com as accounts are migrated to the same platform as that used by Office 365. Apart from advice to switch to using the built-in Mail apps on Windows 8.1 and 10, users are instructed to apply the patch KB3093594 . A few points to note: The change means that migrated accounts can no longer be synchronized using the old DeltaSync protocol. To synchronize these accounts, users can set up the account again to use IMAP . This will enable mail messages and folders to synchronize, but not the calendar and contacts. The patch enables support for Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) to be used instead of DeltaSync in Windows Live Mail 2012 on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 (see System requirements on the download page). Mail synchronization errors can often be cleared by removing the account, closing down the program and waiting a few minutes, then re-launching it and adding the account back again. We don't know what is going to happen with Windows Live Mail 2009 on XP and 2011 on Vista. It is clear that users will no longer be able to sign in with a migrated account to synchronize contacts and calendar, and they won't be able to synchronize mail messages and folders using DeltaSync. Whether the programs will continue to work in other respects (e.g. as a POP3, IMAP and NNTP client) remains to be seen. Apart from this question of synchronizing mail, calendars and contacts with a Microsoft Email account, there is no change now or in the foreseeable future for Windows Live Mail 2012. Mail accounts configured to use POP3 or IMAP will continue to work as before, the default calendar and contacts lists will still be available and the other functions - RSS feeds and newsgroups - continue as before. Because of the many problems that update KB3093594 caused for some users, it has been re-released, now at version 5.0 dated 23 December 2015. If I install WLM2012 will it sync my emails with Outlook.com? I can live without the calendar and the contacts but do need to save mail to my Storage Folders. potchboy

There is one problem with Thunderbird: It does not sync your calendar and contacts for Outlook.com accounts. So what if you want to use the calendar? Do you have to use full blown Outlook now?

My own personal solution was to leave Windows Live Mail, for another email program. If you want to know the name, Thunderbird. I used Live Mail for a long time. However, the update patch didn't work for me. I am on Windows 10. I can't go back anyway, I don't want to. It was time to move on, as we must do in every area of life. Just made sense to me to do so. It's a personal choice.

Yeah and I would also like a mail application that does not alter the server settings and nags you to use your Microsoft Account to log on to your PC too. The Windows 10 mail and calendar 'universal' apps leave a lot to be desired.

What I'm not happy with is the way mail is going. Way back with Windows 8, they used the email client that doesn't empty the email server. ie the new mail will not download new email and empty the email on the server. As well as that, you can't compress the email to file in case you're changing your PC. So in the end, you're going to have 10000+ email including the spam. And no, I don't have to click spam twice, thrice, four times just to get rid of one spam but they do keep coming by whatever means. In short, I'd quite happily use Windows 10 mail app and uninstall Windows Live Essentials, if it had the tick box to delete mail on the server after I've downloaded it to the PC.

There is one problem with Thunderbird:

So what if you want to use the calendar? Do you have to use full blown Outlook now?
