Does anybody know how to stop the Windows Compatability Telemetry (CompatTelRunner.exe) from starting? It causes extremely high disk usage which results in large performance issues.

    I did this:

You can disable the scheduled tasks that starts CompatTelTunner.exe by looking in the Task Scheduler.

Computer Management – System Tools – Task Schedule Library – Microsoft – Windows – Application Experience

    or

    Start - Run - taskschd.msc

    Name: Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser

    Location: \Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience

Collects program telemetry information if opted-in to the Microsoft Customer Experience Improvement Program.

Right click on “Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser” and select “Disable” By default, it is set to start if there is ANY network connection.

Followed this trail to the scheduler and disabled the three tasks. My hard faults immediatly went from 150+ to 0-21. BIG improvement.

Normally, you'll only get issues with compatel when a major update is in the pipe.

If it seems to hang, let the machine run overnight and check with resource monitor in the morning.   If it is still using huge amounts of CPU or Memory or keeping the drive 90%+ busy, read the PID off the resource monitor screen.  (Resource monitor can be started from the task manager)

Open an administrative command prompt, then type in

    taskkill /PID <pid number> /F

It will take a couple of minutes to fully stop.   Close and reopen task manager and make sure it has stopped.

Now, check your notifications, you will probably have one about "major update blah blah requires your permission".     Grant permission, update your privacy settings, whatever it wants and then tell it to install.   Let it take as long as it wants.

Reboot after the install.   Then reboot again.  Log in.

Wait a few minutes, the machine should settle down (presuming you are not multiple OS versions behind) and your disk/CPU/memory usage should be normal.

Worked for my daughters machine that she'd refused to use "because it got slow" for a couple of months till I looked it over.

I thought I had this problem until I realized that I had a bad block that was no reallocating on my Sandisk X400 1TB SSD. It would get stuck on this block sometimes and everything would blow up. I am sending the drive in to collect on my 5 year warranty.

I've come to ignore all canned responses from people with 'Gupta' in their name, or from any other of the so-called 'engineers' from India. No offense, but these folks just spout first-line helpdesk non-sense, and are just a waste of my time and energy.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

As per the description, I understand that you are facing some issues with Windows.

I would suggest you to uninstall Windows update KB number 2976978 from the Windows updates and check if that helps.

I would suggest you to hide the update if you does not want to install.

Refer to the link given below.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2976978

Hope this information helps. Please let us know if you need any other assistance with Windows in future. We will be happy to assist you.

That link is stupid, still cannot get a direct means to make it done. How Smart?
