WINDOWS 10 Pro error The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

I am getting the error "

"WINDOWS 10 error The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail." for every application that i try to launch.

I can't Install Quick Time App

Please help

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. I understand the inconvenience you are facing. I apologies for the delay in reply. I will certainly help you with this.

This error may happen due to system file corruption or Visual C++ redistributable package corruption. I suggest you to follow the below given methods:

Method 1:

Kindly download and install Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable Packagefrom below given link and check if it helps:

Method 2:

I suggest you to run System file checker. System File checker (SFC) scan is done to check if there are any corrupted system files that could be causing this issue. Kindly follow the below given steps:

  • Press Windows key + X, select Command prompt (Admin) to bring up elevated Command prompt.
  • In Command prompt type sfc/scannow and press enter.
  • Restart the computer.

If no corrupted system files were found in the previous state, then I suggest you to try the following steps: 

  • Open command prompt by pressing Windows key + X and selecting “Command prompt admin”.
  • In command prompt, type the following commands and press Enter after each command:

                DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

  • Close the command prompt and restart the PC and check if it works.

The problem was corrupted Google Chrome, my default browser.  I deleted the program and installed a new one.  It works now.

    Hi Ian,

    Resolved the issue after a web chat with Microsoft.

    They wanted to remotely log on to review, however the download to allow this wouldn't run, same error.

    In the end i've unfortunatley had to create a boot on a usb on another computer and reinstall windows, was able to save all personal docs just a lot of reinstalling required.

    On the plus side laptop runs like a dream now!!! Lol

    Full instructions below, had to tweak slightly but pretty straight forward

    Full steps to make a bootable media and custom installation of Windows 10

    here is the link to download windows 10 iso, please click on download tool now, after the download please run the media creation tool to download the iso- https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

    please use this link to download the tool to make a usb bootable, please click on download- http://wudt.codeplex.com/

    here are the further steps after creating a bootable media-

    1. Once the ISO file downloads, use this link and download the application. ‘Run’ and install the application 
    2. You would need a USB flash drive formatted as NTFS for creation of bootable media 
    3. Then open the app which you installed, it will ask you to choose the ISO file. Then it will ask you to choose the USB drive. 
    4. Then the bootable media will be created 
    5. Once the installation/bootable media is created, insert the USB in the computer and restart the computer. 
    6. While restarting it will give you a prompt to press a key (F8/F12), keep tapping the key while the computer restarts 
    7. This will take you to the boot menu, choose CD/DVD option 8. Then installation will start
