I have had a number of computers with IE9 installed that I upgraded to IE11 and this failure occurred without fail. This is the first one that I have not had this problem on.
KB3038314 Fails to Install get the error 80092004.
KB3038314 which was recently deployed by Windows update refuses to install. This is a 64 bit Win 7 Pro machine running IE 11. I've tried both the Windows Update web install method and downloading the update separately and both methods fail. The update is part of MS15-032 released on April 14 (Patch Tuesday). Has anyone else experienced this issue and found a solution? After the update fails there is a failure code of 80092004 displayed and a message that says "Windows Update encountered an unknown error. I have tried the Microsoft Fixit Tool and uninstalling IE 11 and reinstalling. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

2015-05-11T19:21:46+00:00 I just had a success with this one. It is a computer that had IE9 installed and was just upgraded to IE11. In the past all attempts led to this error. In this case, I installed all updates but this one, restarted, then installed KB3038314. Success.
Maybe this means they finally have fixed this. Woody Leonhard recently wrote that this update was in version 4.

Disclaimer: A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot. You must log on to the computer as an administrator to be able to perform a clean boot. Your computer may temporarily lose some functionality when you perform a clean boot. When you start the computer normally, the functionality returns. However, you may receive the original error message, or experience the original behavior if the problem still exists. If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps.

Once you perform clean boot do refer to the section “ How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting” to boot the computer in normal mode.
