KB3035583 Installing Windows 10 using Windows Update?

Would you please tell me how to prevent the installation of KB3035583 in my computer and if it is already installed, how to remove it?  Also, are there other updates that we need to be concerned about that enable this behaviour?

KB3035583 now appears as an Important update in Windows Update and is checked which means it will be automatically installed if the user does not uncheck it.  If automatic update is set, it will install without intervention.

There are credible articles that say that Microsoft either has installed or will install changes to my computer that will enable Microsoft to use it as an advertising platform and then install Windows 10 without first obtaining an informed decision to do so.  I truly hope this is not true.

On behalf of my clients and their 162 Windows "consumer" computers, I must tell you that we do not grant Microsoft or any other vendor the right to do this.  When other Windows players do this, we regard it as malware and take great care to remove it.

Microsoft got to where it is today by selling Windows.  We have spent decades learning how to use Windows and billions of dollars buying Windows computers and Windows software.  We own these systems.  They are ours, not Microsoft's.

Windows Update has earned a huge trust.  We trust Microsoft to use Windows Update to keep our computers safe and secure.  When Patch Tuesday comes along we install all the updates that Microsoft says are "important." We assume those to be either plugging a security leak or fixing a software error.

We all hope Windows 10 will be something we will want.  We will carefully review and consult trusted advisors before we install Windows 10.  We have seen Windows 8 and rejected it.  Windows 8 is a bad product we did not choose.  

Automatically installing Windows 10 on our computers would be a severe abuse of a well-earned trust.  Changing our computers to enable them to become advertising platforms is also an abuse.

    This is the list I was using as well . And do you feel comfortable with the security patches?

    These are the updates that I council my 150 clients computers to hide before updating.  All of them are on Never and once a month update using a list I provide.  This was the list that I provided this week.  None of these 150 have a problem, so I am pretty sure of my direction.

    I do have the list of patches to avoid. And I have WU set to 'Never'. Trouble is, I don't feel confident installing any of last Tuesday 's patches. I posted a question to Woody asking for his recommendations on Tuesday's patches but haven't rec'd an answer.

    You are likely to have to do a complete re-install of Windows 7

    If you are going to do a re-install, you may be able to take your data off first.  Remove the hard drive and put it into a USB external drive housing.  Connect to a working PC, copy the data off.

    Always check to ensure the hard drive you are about to rebuild is actually sound from a hardware perspective.  Download and run your hard drive manufacturer’s drive testing software.

    First off, you want to try a System Repair disk to boot the PC.  It may be more successful in fixing and offer other alternatives.  If you do not have one, go to any other PC that has windows 7 with the same bitness (32/64).  Start globe, All Programs, Maintenance.  You need just a blank CD.  When you boot, ensure that you are in fact booting on that CD and not the hard drive.  Usually pressing F12 will lead you to the option to do so.

    If that does not work, you are likely into a re-install.  Takes a lot of time, but not all attended time.

    1. Factory restore — replaces everything on the hard drive with exactly what it had on it when you bought it
    2. “Upgrade” install using the Win7 install disk.  You start as if you are re-installing from scratch but when it gets to the point where it offers the Upgrade choice you choose that.
    3. Full Clean install.  The only absolutely sure way to have a perfectly clean system.

    You will need a Win7 install disk for 2 or 3.  You will need a legal product code for 3 and the win7 disk must match the edition of the code and its bitness (32 or 64)

    I recommend you do Windows Updates.  Just do it under your full control.  By setting it to NEVER, you are essentially taking control.  I recommend you do updates once per month on Patch Tuesday which is the 2nd Tuesday of each month.  Simply start WU, hide the update that you do not want, then proceed with update as usual.  Read www.AskWoody.com and there you will find an updated list.
