IMO, you guys make the mistake of thinking that Microsoft "missed" or "overlooked" what the customers wanted.  That is not what this is.  They know what we want.  THEY want to add another market and are prepared to sacrifice the needs of their current customers to do so.  Whether this is a wise choice can be debated.  But it is the struggle between producer and customer that I referred to.

In matters of state the saying goes "War is the continuation of politics by other means" (Clausewitz).  Microsoft's coercion of its customers--its war on customers--is an extension of marketing by other means.

The concept of a touch interface makes sense on those two products, but runs against all logic for a computer.  Windows people massively rejected 8.  It is almost impossible to find an IT person who would use it.

Is Windows 10 an improved Windows 8 with a desktop, OR is Windows 10 an improved Windows 7?

I agree .... I have no need (or use) for a touch interface on my desktop computer. It appears that many of Microsoft's customers feel the same. It makes one wonder how Microsoft missed this fact when developing Windows 8 (in spite of the massive customer feedback they received).

One of the design compromises that MS may have made with Windows 10 is the apparent elimination of the option to disable "automatic updates".

If Microsoft had a track record of consistently producing high quality monthly updates, then I could see how forced updates might be advantageous.

But Microsoft's track record (for monthly updates) is inconsistent ... some updates install with no problems while others have caused problems (including blue screens).

I think canadian tech is correct ... if Windows 10 is just a follow-on to Windows 8 with a desktop, customers (and enterprises) will reject it.

Microsoft's fiscal year 2015 fourth quarter report was not so good. There was an $8.4 Billion loss due to the layoffs and write-down of the Nokia purchase, and their Windows OEM revenue dropped 22%.

Microsoft's next quarterly report will reflect customer's acceptance or rejection of Windows 10. Forcing (and re-issuing) updates like KB3035583 (and others such as KB3022345, KB3068707, KB2952664, etc) is NOT the way to encourage customers to migrate to Windows 10. The way to convince customers to migrate to Windows 10 is for Microsoft to LISTEN to customer feedback ... given that Windows 10 release is mere days away, it may be too late for that! Windows 10 will be what Microsoft says it is (regardless of what their customer want) .... time (and the next few quarterly reports) will tell if Microsoft is right.

Its worse than that!  Through really good design, strategy and management, Windows has become such a dominant product that there is no real competition.  I do not mean to insult Apple here.  I respect it.  However Apple is a completely different kind of product for a very special and different market.

Unfortunately, over the years since Bill Gates dropped out, the company has been run by a lot of people with what I will politely call just wrong ideas.  Windows is what made Microsoft!  Yet Microsoft does not act like it recognizes that fact and is taking the company to other places, really either ignoring or just disrespecting its roots.  I do not think Microsoft understands or is listening to its customers -- I mean at all.

Windows has a very, very large set of followers who are very different from the Apple folks.  The Windows following is a conservative bunch who like to be in control, demand privacy, and do not take any kind of change easily.  They have to be really convinced first.  They do not take kindly to mistakes.

Windows 8 was a really interesting case.  It was an attempt to massively change Windows in order to sell phones and pads.  The concept of a touch interface makes sense on those two products, but runs against all logic for a computer.  Windows people massively rejected 8.  It is almost impossible to find an IT person who would use it.

It is very interesting to note that the phone product is being dumped after declaring huge losses, and the pad product is a distant 33rd in the marketplace.  Windows 10 was very explicitly designed to span all three products.  Who knows what design compromises were made that will negatively affect the only place you will find 10 -- the computer.

The really big question in my mind is:

Is Windows 10 an improved Windows 8 with a desktop, OR is Windows 10 an improved Windows 7?

If it is the former, I predict 10 will be a flop.  If it is the latter 10 will be a success, but that will come very slowly.

I will reject 10 if it is an attempt to build a marketing platform that by default grant huge ranges of privileges to Microsoft and disadvantages to their competitors.  Windows people will demand the right to choose the products they use.

Years ago there was a book entitled, "What They Don't Teach You in Harvard Business School."

The Harvard Business School is known for the "case" method of teaching.  I wish they would make this situation a case study in the essential struggle between producer and consumer.  Economists like to talk about producers as if they eagerly adapt themselves to what the consumer wants.  "The customer is king," right?  Well, not always.  This adaptation often occurs only with misgivings, resistance, and bargaining.  In this extreme case, the producer is taking the initiative to rewrite the terms of engagement to suit themselves.  And there is no bargaining.

Microsoft has re-issued this patch at least 5 times.  So, it did not unhide.  It actually just installed it again.

All you can do is repeat the same uninstall and hide procedure again and again till the stubborn teenager stops doing it.  I am hoping come July29, this nonsense will finally end.
