Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?

I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

  1. I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
  2. My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
  3. My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
  4. After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
  5. From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run. 

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

That is the compatibility update for win 7 RTM.  Care to tell us more about the problem?

    Like another responder, I am running Win 10...have been under the "Insiders Program" since May.

    I have to wonder if this is the rumored compatibility examiner, which allegedly can shut down illegal copies of Microsoft programs.  Just a hunch.

    I've made a clean install from the insider preview some months ago, and I choose share nothing. I've found that disabling network adapter stops  CompatTelRunner, so it's a program stealing our data, I've applied 'the cole protocol' and Cortana shouldn't have access to any info.

    I've tested to bring up network again and disk access ramp up.

    One of the biggest issues is that we have no idea what is already built into Windows 10, what will be added, what security issues arise from apps etc etc.

    What is easily assumed from its current direction is that Microsoft is obviously gathering data from computers it has no business gathering, looking to 'control' our computers and wants to be the 'major' supplier of software with Microsoft in control.

    I see a day when they will eliminate 'local accounts' and you will have no choice but to run YOUR computer under a Microsoft account.

    It is all about personal data gathering, control of the computer world and lining their pockets.

    Never ever gave a thought to buying a Mac , for several reasons, but giving a 2nd look.

    Sadly, as long as we have the Cloud, I don't think that Mac would be any kind of alternative.

    Going back to the old days before internet and never going on the internet would not even help. Personal information gets on the internet about each of us and gets there by others we know, business's and even Government Agencies.

    Foolishly we are accepting this and giving up what we treasure.  Security.

    My opinion. Draw your own conclusions.

    Thanks JP. I am not up on all the tech, but your post seems to exactly cover my position on this. Since this is on the Microsoft site I can only hope that one of their techs can tell us what might be wrong with uninstalling and hiding the updates you suggest. I could do that, but would like to know what possible consequences might occur on my Windows 7 computer. I tried Windows 10. It just didn't work on this system and do the things I can do on windows 7.
