KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets. AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

Davide I'm really happy for you but those steps were posted by the support folks way back on the 18th. If these manual steps work, then the revised KB probably will work as well. For those people (John, MW 67, etc etc) I think we'll be closing the bar down and still stuck here.

Therefore for those folks that STILL cannot get this update installed even after yesterday's revision and are STILL throwing off errors please email me at susan-at-msmvps.com (change the -at- to @) and let's get support cases opened up.

MW can you go and reactivate your case? Yes I know, they haven't helped but I still truly want them to get your log files in this post v2 version of this update to ensure they understand what's going on.

After several days of frustrating attempts I finally found the SOLUTION to same problem with code 80073712.

Here steps for Win8.1 32bit:

Download offline installers for the six updates in the KB2919355 set:http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42327

Installed the five updates other than KB2919355 itself (i.e. KB2959977, KB2938439, KB2937592, KB2934018 and KB2932046, in that order)

Restart computer (possibly more than once, I can't quite remember)

Fix Windows Update: How do I reset Windows Update components?

Scan Windows system components: sfc /scannow

Remove KB2919355 package:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1.14 7. Clean up the WinSxS folder: dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase 8. Restart computer 9. Run offline installer: Windows8.1-KB2919355-x86.msu 10. Restart computer (I had to do this at least twice, but check Windows Update each time until the update is listed as "successful")

Here steps for Win8.1 64bit (my system):

Download offline installers for the six updates in the KB2919355 set: Download Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based Systems (KB2919355) from Official Microsoft Download Center

Installed the five updates other than KB2919355 itself (i.e. KB2959977, KB2938439, KB2937592, KB2934018 and KB2932046, in that order)

My opinion is that crucial step is the command in point 7.

Kinda need to put XP back on this computer

was compelled to take Windows 8 at purchase, a flawed, buggy product that doesn't run a number of games, like Master of Orion 2. Got compelled into Window 8.1 by nagging pushes from microsoft, it crashed the whole system and forced a hard drive wipe and windows reinstall. Tried to get support but was unsuccessful.

Now I have windows 8 again, and its going to cease being supported? Whats the point in having this at all, seems like I'm better off with an older version of windows, as this version continues to deteriorate. It seems that there are no solutions in any windows product. I guess its all meaningless.... It feels like there is no point to any of it. Its like wandering a desert. I try to explain the insanity of all this to my partner who has Apple, and is perplexed when I say 'ignore all errors' or "there isn't a way to make it work'

It feels like nothing gets fixed, we just move on to the next bugs, with all of the ones before

I recognize this post has no point either
